The orientation of the HDD, being that its vertical, doesn't harm the drive at all as this is how its normally mounted in some cases. My friends car has lowered suspension, and hits its bump stops on occasion, so Im just taking "precautionary" measures to protect the drive. This is my first carputer install, and I guess its a learning curve. If I screw the HDD from mounting it in that way and surrounding it in foam... so what!! Ill be paying for it and learning in the process.

A lot of people on here have suspended their drives with elastic bands and whatever for shock. All ive done is surround it with a little foam and everyone gets fired up! haha :-)

i'd be concerned about foam more for static capacitance than anything else.

i'd suggest just rubbermounting it vertically. that's it.

i realize sudden jolts are what causes it to crash, but rubbermounting it does decrease noise and may lengthen the life of the drive. it's worth the effort.

foam just doesnt seem viable to me.

where I have my HDD stashed away there is no room to mount it vertically. When I had everything sitting in my trunk in the computer case, I had it resting on some foam and I could hit bumps no problem. When it did crash, I checked, and the case had slipped off the foam.... So I think I'll throw some foam in for safety, because its cheap and its not gonna hurt anything. The foam that is conductive is the stuff that it's shipped with, because it keeps static from building up during shipping. It's made to be mildly conductive. Foam you pick up from a hobby shop or somewhere is not going to be conductive. If you're scared it will be, test it.
