1985 corrolla GTi rear boot install

hey everyone,

This is a project 10 months in the making. It certainly doesnt look like it, but its mainly dealt with only on Saturdays.

This is my friend's car, which I agreed to research, purchase (with his money :-D) and install.

So far I'd say that it is about 40 percent complete. A false floor was constructed, which is able to be removed, a custom computer enclosure with perspex window, two fans for ventilation, foam suspended 3.5 inch HDD, etc.
MT2-ATX powering a fullsize mobo with 3ghz processor (yes i know overkill, I adviced against it but whacha gonna do)
Enclosure is fully removalble by sliding upwards on custom mounts.

All there is to be done now is to wire the thing up!!!

Oh and will be a retractable 7" touchscreen at the front, dvd burner, sat nav, fm radio etc...

Why the foam for the hard drive?

I'm gathering that you did it for protection? Did you do much research before deciding on that route?

yes it is for protection,

the foam is quite soft and springy, so it will soak up any vibrations. It is also mounted vertically and air flow is quite adequate around it.

And yes, I did research before deciding on that route, :-)

so you researched to find that the spongey stuff does absolutely nothing to help the drive?

You researched and found that no one is running into issues with vibration on either a full size or a laptop drive?

im guessing no...

the foam might actually be bad for it, 'causing it to vibrate more, or oscillate more than being hard mounted..., no?

Eh - not so sure, I'm just getting at the fact that it's been proven time and time again by various users on this board that people worrying about vibration and their hard drives are over thinking the situation and that it's never really been a problem. Only in the most extreme of situations, and even then, the foam wouldn't have helped those situations.

Vibration isn't the problem. It's sudden jolts. I did a similar mount for my hard drive, because my car is lowered. If I hit a pothole hard enough, my hard drive still shuts off causing the computer to reboot. One time it crashed windows and I had to repair it and reinstall all my drivers. Many times it has messed with Winamp, which is already unstable enough and doesn't need any more reason to screw up.

Needless to say, I'm about to redo my install, and a much more adequate suspension for my HDD.

I have a stage 2 coil over on my car. Lowered to about as low as I can go. Had to buy a skid plate to protect my engine. Hit pot holes, etc. Not a single issue.

I'd question the orinentation of your hard drive as well as the mounting method.

Yeah i was about to say, my car is lowered alot as well and i thought i bent rims a few times i hit so hard but the pc never even hicupped. And im on some of the hardest setups out there for my car, Tein SSP coilovers with the EDFC and lowered 2". The funny part is, my HD is doublesided sticky taped to the side of case, so there is ZERO protection there

hehe - yeah - I bent two wheels less than a week after getting them. Thanks to the 'me first' mentality of this girl. She just had to be first to the stop light....
