yeah, I reread what I wrote & it did sound absolute, there are always exceptions & newer tech is fast making it where the tranny is efficent enough to be unbeatable by an equivelent stick, also in some cases the slippage is actually a benefit in allowing the engine to reach a higher rpm where it can make more power,
just wanted to get the point across that an automatic is not always faster than a stick, & the consitancy of an automatic is the larger factor in it being much more desirable in a drag car...
in most cases a stick will put more power to the ground & in most cases a stick will be more efficent, the inefficencies of the automatic are the cause of excessive heat buildup too. personally, I don't like stickshifts at all, & the only time I'd want one is if it was in an extreme sportscar like a ferarri or something, I'd want an automatic even in a vette or the like, I hate having to row a car through the gears, I'd rather have my left foot propped up on the dash:)
....& that automatic manual is exactly what I'm talking about.... in the end, a computer shifted manual tranny should be the best of both worlds.... perfect shifts of an automatic, combined with the increased efficency of a stick non slushbox...
Yeah well it works a little differently...it has 2 clutches basically...IMO a stick has it's real advantage in curvy roads because you can exactly control when to change gears, stay in a low gear/high rpm while you are in a curve and rev out of the curve exactly when you want it.

But like I said a real good automatic might be better than a regular stick, however, the crappy civic automatic is for sure slower than a stick civic.
I think I like street cars that are boring to drive:)... I like a car that floats comfortably instead of a hyped up machine that's gonna get me in trouble again:D
the best stick I ever owned was an older supra, man that thing was like butter, sweet light clutch action with an easy shift that was just smooth... funny thing is at the same time I also ws driving a bronco stick, now the bronco stick was like the older mustangs but worse... you would almost have to hold the steering wheel & pull it as you stepped on the clutch.... it was real heavy... when I got outta the bronco & into the supra my foot would almost go through the floor, felt like the clutch pedal was broken in comparison:)
I know exactly what you mean.

As for the floaters, I used to own a 76 Coupe DeVille (About late 80's, early 90's). Talk about a car that floated. 70 on the freeway was like riding on air.
Another guy from the neighborhood owned a 72 New Yorker. Man how I loved to ride in that car.
This thread is nothing but giggles now... :)
