2000 Porsche Boxster S install
FINISHED!!!!!!!!!! AND IT WORKS, LIVES AND BREATHES!!!!!!!!!!
Finished install, running Centrafuse RC5, with a CD in the slot-loading drive
Full view. Including the trackball (hopefully temporary, until the touchscreen works again). It sits in the space for the ashtray
View from the left with the box for infrared keyboard, 2 USB plugs and hard-off power switch. Note the HDD peeking out at the front
View from the right, with screen closed and PC off. Can you see it?
With the covers still taken off
Cable nightmare, for your viewing pleasure. This is the pretty side!
See below for more info and pictures:
I just finished installing (again) in my 2000 Boxster S. But this time I am installing EVERYTHING in the center console.
Some pics of the install. It wouldn't be possible without my dad, who did all the mechanical work!
Here is how it works:
Jetway Mini-Itx board, 1 GHZ, 256 MB ram. Plenty fast
nlited-Win XP SP2
M1-ATX power supply
40GB 3.5" HDD
7" in-dash motorized touchscreen (touch not working right now )
Ground Loop Isolator
USB bluetooth stick
USB Wifi stick
USB touchpanel controler
USB GPS mouse
USB rearview camera (install in the far future)
Trackball (right now, until the touchscreen works again)
anyway, to give you an idea: (hope it makes sense)
-MoBo is installed in the lowest slot of the center console (where the equalizer normally sits. Equalizer still fits, and covers MoBo) screwed to the top of the slot upside down.
-slotloading slimline DVD-RW is installed where the little "Batman" cover is, in the little space. fits like a glove (after hours of checking and adjusting)
-the screen sits in the upper 1-DIN slot of the lower console and unfolds upwards (its a DWW-700M)
-powersupply is underneath the DVD drive, built a little case for it
-HDD sits upright and sideways behind the console (where all the cables and pipes are. fits snuggly in there
-GPS mouse sits on dashboard next to the alarmlight. Cable is run though the dashboard (removed the instrument cluster)
-powerbutton and LED is inserted into a blank switch on upper dashboard
-original radio sits in upper console. Sound via the AUX-in on the radio. Used a Ground loop Isolator to get rid of engine wine, hard drive sound, beeping and background noise
-microphone sits in the determined spot for phone (on left of the instrument cluster)
-there is a free 12V power plug (black) inside the center console which I use. It also has ignition control
-there is a box with the infrared sensor of keyboard/mouse, in which I integrated 2 USB ports (from MoBo connectors) and a hard-off powerswitch. this is tucked in the driver foot area, where the carpet ends (attached with velcro)
It is a super clean install (I think, give me your thoughts), totally reversible without any visible changes, no long wires anywhere. No need for a MoBo case, as it sits inside the console. And with the screen turned off and inside its housing no thief even realizes that there is a nice PC in the car.
Still to do:
-get the f*ing touchscreen to work (might have to switch the touchpanel)
-install microphone (ordered) in the spot where the original Porsche phoneinstall microphone sits
Let me know what you think
Of course running Centrafuse RC5, the best car-pc software!
