My Solution for Nav in Non-IBus BMW

I hope this info helps others who are looking for a Nav/Upgrade solution for their Non-Ibus BMWs.

I was looking for an upgrade to my non-Ibus 740iL since I felt the car was already great and just needed Nav and Sound System upgrade. After many hours of research and many hours of labor, I am now able to access so much more than I originally thought was possible. The solution came in the form of a CarPC. The full write up is at the link. Here are the features:

    MP3 Player
    DVD/CD player/writer
    GPS Navigation
Steering wheel controls to change tracks and volume
    Wireless networking
    Wireless Internet (with Sprint wireless)
    XM radio ready (not installed)
bluetooth ready ( check out the mini bluetooth
keyboard in the pics. Lights up BMW orange, too!)
    additional 1/8in input jack
    additional usb input jack

    Write up - http://www.7series.com

Very nice integration. Are you going to get all of your wheel mounted buttons to work or are you just happy with volume & track change?

Thanks. I'm happy with the track and vol controls, but plan on adding more features. I'd like to add voice control as well. Does anyone truly ever complete their CarPC? I'm currently working on posting all of the install photos so you can see the whole process.

Using Ibus control is an issue for pre 99 BMW models radios.

Can you post your pictures on the www.7series.com site so that I/ we can have a look through. Interested in the details of the Bluetooth mini keyboard that backlights the keys in "amber" not orange! BMW dash lighting is amber which is a kinda cross between orange and red.

Any information on this would serve as inspirational.

Ok. ok. I stand corrected. Amber it is. I will be posting more pictures on the www.7series.com website of the whole install process I went through...very soon. I will post an as soon as they're uploaded.

In the meantime if you're looking for the keyboard I used, here is a great photo:

I bought mine on eBay. I think the keyboard is perfect for CarPCs. It's very small. There are some sacrifices because you only have 39 keys, but the convenience makes up for it. It was a much better option for me because I could easily store it in the center console.
