Ah, that's like my dream car right there! WRX wagon with a CarPC and CB, awesome! I have basically the same, except without the turbo, or the AWD, and mine's a Hyundai, and the computer's a desktop, and the CB isn't working right now... but it's close! I'm also well under $1k. Anyway, great job hiding the CPU, it's good to see a fully functional wagon/hatch and it looks so clean! Any problems with overheating in there?

Extending the faceplate is always fun...soldering cat-5 cable is not so much fun. I cant believe it hasn't stopped working yet - I did it over a year ago and still no problems. Never saw that coming.

As far as the overheating goes, I did have a bit of trouble on an 8hr road trip in 90+ degree heat. I haven't quite figured out how to solve it easily...anybody got some ideas?

I'd just prop the lid open a few inches, possibly get a small usb fan to push the air out as well. Not too often the 8hr road trips in 90+ degree I'm sure, but if that's what it takes, then I'm sure simply cracking that lid would do it and you can back it up with a usb fan if needed.
