Shutdown controller options

I tried 3 different shutdown controllers from this site so far:

1. was a small prog that when pins 4 & 8 were shorted it would pause winamp & shutdown
2. another small one that was used with lpt port pins 13 & 25 to shutdown
3. a battery monitoring type that would shut down a laptop when running on battery

number 2 was the best as far as connectivity as i only have 1 com port and it's in use with my ir receiver. unfortunately it wuld work on my home PC but not my laptop, i tried everything but it wouldn't give a port value (only 0)

Is there any progs I can try that work with lpt or another method? I don't want to use the 3rd one as i want to leave it powered when i'm in the house sometimes for data transfers & such

I really like the function of #1 with the winamp pause, maybe someone knows of an lpt version
