    XP Embedded

Hello I just wanted to chime in and let everyone know that I am developing an xp embedded OS. It is currently working on my laptop with full drivers, centrafuse and streetdeck. I am getting to frontend within 25 sec from cold boot and 10-11 secs from hibernate. I will be building an image for my MKII1200 this weekend will keep everyone posted. Has anyone seen xp embedded being sold? If so how much?

If you want to be able to legaly distrubute XP embedded images you first have to buy the Studio (1000.00 USD) The after that each copy of your XPe image is only 99.00 each. But that image is tied back to your studio key. You can download the eval version from MS's website but any build created in a eval version will always expire after 30-60 days, even if you re-compile it on a licenced studio.
So if you wanted to give out the configuration you made, you will have to build it on a licensed studio and make that studio license avaible to anyone who wants to use your build. ( I cant tell you where to get the full studio, but its out there, for long term testing) Oh and its a 1.2GB download.

The time goals you've set should be able to be reached, I was able to build an XPe image that was only 160mb and boots in about 20sec's on that little Intel board offered in the store.

I was only able to get the studio from my vendor (softchoice.com) but here is a link to the eval http://www.microsoft.com/windows/emb...val/trial.mspx

I do have the xp embedded studio.I am just wondering if there is anybody offering custom images for car pc applications. Is that 20sec cold boot time or out of stndby or hib? Have you played around with the EWF foe faster booting?

That boot time is from a cold boot. I am using a CF to IDE adapter so I have to use EWF. As far as anyone offering custom images? Not that I know of I beleive that the Infill G4 comes with a custom version of XP Home, but no full Xpe images. I am working with a few vendors of in-dash pc's and I will offer an Xpe OS for thoese devices, but nothing yet.

This topic is near and dear to my heart, however it's well out side my scope of comprehension. I've got everything running pretty well on all my parts: XP Pro, RR, the GPS drivers, and the like, but I have to figure out how to reduce the software footprint and load it on the 4 gig CF/IDE. I guess I don't understand the difference between EWF and XPe. Could either of you elaborate a little, Thanks.

EWF is a part of XPE. It is used to control or stop writing to the CF card. If you use xpe on a cf without this it will greatly reduce the life of you card. You then would have everything stored on the system to another drive. I am also pretty new to XPE so that is my understanding. Hope that helps.

It actually does. Thanks. I am now actually trying to make the CF/IDE bootable by ghosting it via usb. I have no idea if that will work, but it's kind of a test and I'm stuck for now as to how else to get to the next step until I can figure out the whole XPE thing. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to WinCE? Since I haven't seen much traffic on it, I can only assume it's not well suited for this type of application.

    Ce

I do not know much about CE, but I am pretty sure that it does not have the capibilities to run a x86 system. Embedded is customizable version of regular xp. You can trim off all the stuff you dont need to improve performance and speed. I dont see why ghosting your drive would not work. Let me know how it goes.

CE can run on x86 devices but is probably not going to be compatible with the common dash software. The dll names are different so P/Invokes (in .net) will break and WinAPI functions have different names. I would say that CE is a good platform overall, but the software is not abundant. Platform builder would be the tool to customize your CE image but is maybe hard to come by.
