    Alternative Windows Shells, 98 micro

after installing 98lite with the 98micro install i read all the help files extensivly and realized that it is possible to use a windows shell other than the 95 shell or 98 shell..... I was just wondering if anyone on this forum has done just this. I need a shell that is going to be compatible with winamp or another really good windows mp3 player, and gps navigation software for windows... I havent decided yet what software i will use for gps, and a good Divx/DVD player

I was once going to use linux but found that it booted slower than windows... and was overall slower then windows... it is more than likely because of the distribution i used which was linux redhat 8.0, I'm sure I will more than likely try out a bunch more distriubtions for linux as a viable solution for my mp3 car player but windows is deffinately an option now that i have 98lite.

BTW: 98lite is what i currently also use for my desktop computer aftering seeing how well it performs on my carputer so regardless if i use linux or not on my carputer i still am interested in the Alternative Windows Shells thing for my desktop home desktop.

A windows shell will not change the programs that an operating system is compatible with. I like litestep for a shell but I have not used it in a while so I dont know if it has bloated out of control in the last few years.

glad u discovered 98lite for yaself too..... I love it..

I have changed the shell to my mp3car application, easy to do.... and stops the loading of the 'explorer' shell by default...... saving some memory and loading time..

as moxnix said, the shell will not determine what u can/cant run.... unless of course the shell has a incompatiblity with a program... then its a bad shell

I just use winmm.dll (windows multimedia extensions) to playback DivX video...... in my own custom player.... thats what most video players use anyway...

Win98 Lite kept me from running quite a few programs correctly, including CoPilot.

i sorta dont want to set the shell to my program because my program isnt going to have everything all in one I will more than likely need

winamp - for mp3 or audio cds
    dvd/divx software - for dvd/divx
    gps software - for gps

and of course inkind of stupid games i might want to play in my car just to show it off a bit more to friends hehehe

ummm so i need a shell with less resources used then default shell.... so that i can switch between the different programs... I was thinking lightstep but also see geoshell ... I want to use whichever is the smallest and uses the least amount of resources... would be great if there was a web site out there that had a comparison between the different shells but i will more than likely have to download them all and test them all for myself.

I just tried about 5 of the most popular themes i could find... all but one in my opinion was not for me... Litestep I definately choose over the default windows 95 shell i was using.... not to sure on resources usage but boot times wise my boot time stayed the same BUT at the same time I got a more customizable interface... this thing is seriously sweet! I still would like to check out some more though so anyone using alternative shells to the 95 and 98 ones let me know so far litestep is the one i will use

As much as you might consider explorer.exe from win95/98 bloatware, for all that it does (even with its win95 limitations), I don't think that you will find a replacement that has a smaller foot print and that still does everything. And litestep is probably the most popular replacement, but there are oodles of them. WindowBlinds is another by stardock I believe. And litestep is litestep.com or .org, or was it litestep2000.org. Its got a sourceforge page too i believe.
