Street Deck Put a Hurt on Music Files

    Hi All,

I ripped about 100 personal music cd's onto the hd of my little VIA carpc, using windows media player in .wav format...

Yep, there were the albums, album art, and all of the good-sounding tunez.

I played with them for a day or so, enjoying the better-sounding .wav rips, and configing wmp to my tastes. Worked xlnt.

Along comes Street Deck. I loaded it up, and entered the music player:
    >Album art sporadic
    >songs all in wrong order
    >some songs not visable at all

Then, when I went back to wmp:
    >ALL album art not there
    >strangely, song #1 from almost every cd --- gone!
    >songs also a bit scrambled in order

...Checked "my music" files; everything in order, but now I'm afraid to load up Street Deck to even use the GPS or anything else, lest it somehow mess up my cd music files, which I had to delete and re-rip (they work and appear perfectly again in wmp)

    Any suggestions?

If I don't open the SD music player, will simply opening SD for other purposes destructively re-index my beloved tunez??

    Thx for input

First thing to do is to do a Search of your hard drive for any of the songs that you say are missing and see if they are gone, or just moved. Chances are, it has something to do with SD's indexing (in which case they are not gone, just moved).

Then check your Edit Media Paths settings (under Start-Programs-Streetdeck-Tools) and see if it's set for SD to index your music to a different folder than where they currently reside. In any case, set those settings to what you want.

Thirdly, if you must use Wav's... and I know the sound quality improvement is worth the loss of disk space... you're going to have headaches when it comes to tag information and album art. WMP does a decent job of making it look like it has organization of your files, but it's based on information pulled from the net, where mp3's and wma's have the informating embedded in the files. It makes for a lot less headaches.

    Thanks,

Yep, I notice how whenever I rip a cd using WMP, it checks: fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com. Sometimes, the album art doesn't come through, but repeating "find album info" sometimes gets it. At lest, all songs are there and generally named correctly.

I hope that if I load Street Deck onto this computer and DON'T use the music player feature, only GPS and others...that SD doesn't re-index my music files anyway.

    Thanks for yr reply.

If you don't want to use SD for music and don't want it to index your files, just go to that Edit Media Paths settings I mentioned, and clear everything out of there.
