    little help on win98

hi guys i am having a hard time understanding exactly what i am going to need to do to windows to get it to work as my mp3box
as of right now I just used the ieiradicator to help strip it down a little more. I was curious as to which programs besides winamp I am going to need to get this thing rolling, I also hear that I should strip windows to make it boot faster, any help would be appreciated

I stripped windows using 98lite works great but because im use a GFX card with RCA I need DirectX installed no biggie, its all in what you want to do or have done.
eg. How are you going to transfer files? LAN or removable storage, if it is LAN you need the NetBEUI install for TCIP transfers.
How about how to control it? IR HTTP Keypad? lots of options for IR still need some drivers and set up no problems there keypad req. no extra drivers but can look tackey HTTP req. LAN as mentioned above.
I would say it would be safe to strip IE, Outlook, Windows Media player (but keep the codecs!) install the old windows 98 explorer shell (less bloat ware) other then that your set.

like I said it all depends on your set up.

ok here is what i have done so far and my setup

    k6-2 350mhz
baby at motherboard, with onboard video and sound
    64mb simm ram
4 gig hard drive and win98 non lite edition
also using a fm modulator and building my own dc to dc power supply

so far I have installed windows and i put a network card in and transfered all my mp3's over already, i will take the network card out when i am done transfering files. I installed winamp also but that is it. I also installed an infared creative labs remote for controlling it. So basically i have win98 installed with winamp my remote and my mp3's but now, how do I strip windows down to boot faster and boot directly to winamp and be able to select my playslists with my remote.

install win98 using 98lite..... that is install it lite, dont install it 'bloated' to be cut back later.... works alot better IMHO... and then you can use the 'MICRO' install option (you cant use this on a 'bloated' win98 - only from a fresh install)

you basically need to combine the win98 cabs (setup files) along with the 98lite distrib... the instructions are in the doco... that way when u pick 'custom' for the windows components you get a HUGE list of everything that u can remove......

to boot straitght to winamp, either add winamp to the startup folder (easy way)... or the better way is to make winamp the shell.... just open the SYSTEM.INI file and change the line 'SHELL=explorer.exe' to point to the winamp.exe file... e.g.

    'SHELL=c:\program files\winamp\winamp.exe'
    Project - GAME OVER :(

ok guys well i have a few more questions. So far I have done a few things to make win98 boot a little faster and if you guys could throw in some tweaks to make it boot quicker I'd appreciate it. Next, my main question is this:

I have winamp set as the shell and I have 16 playlists and I use the creative labs IR remote. Now when the mp3 box boots, it goes straight to the winamp and loads only one playlist that i put in the startup folder. If i put all 16 playlists in there then it will put all the playlists in the winamp play box. Now my question is how can I boot to winamp but be able to go through my 16 playlists one at a time instead of having them all load up at once? The remote is a Creative pc-dvd ir remote that is 8 bucks at www.compgeeks.com

thanks guys I'd really appreciate the help
