Yes and this Chinese O/S controls the audio/video switch which selects the sources (AuxIN/Windows CE ARM powered PDA/FM-Radio/DVD Player/DVB Tuner). (therefore these units don't have TMC because the Radio and Windows CE part is don't know each other)
It would be cheaper (doesn't this word bring their chinese eyes to glare?) and much more flexible to have a Windows CE ARM as the boss controlling the FM Tuner IC, Audio and stuff.
In fact this would be the lesser expensive solution for car entertainment below x86 and Windows XP. It would make the devices useful for us and others -> so much useful that we would buy them !

I guess there are 2-3 electronic designs in around 10-20 different brands and all of them are chinese mixed chaos design

Hmm, I recently purchased one of these and have scouring the internets the past few days for info on accessing the Win CE 5 side of the unit. If it were possible to access the Win CE, I question whether the unit would be in contact with the DVD drive, the USB drive, the two SD card slots, BT, etc. If it were, we might have something here. If not, I still have a decent DVD/GPS 2-din stereo. It could use a seperate equalizer in my opinion to sound better.

Possible with "soldering" - if you look inside at the PCB you will see why the " ...
The DVD player CPU (documentation NA, Firmware locked) controls USB and DVD drive. The SD card slot may belong to the Windows CE ARM (How does the Unit access GPS map data ?) ?

It's a waste of time... better invested in searching the chinese guys and kicking their butts.

I opened up my unit and start messing with things. I see that the CE side of the unit is directly connect to one of the SD cards and it has its own stand alone board just for running windows and theres outputs and inputs to pump the sound, video, and touch screen data through the radios firmware. there is another OS firmware built in the DVD Rom drive. The DVD Rom drive controls the USB, SD (not GPS SD), Bluetooth, and FM/AM Radio. The Radios OS controls the TV, AUX and built in AMP and EQ. I also was able to unlock the CE side everything is in Chinese but I manage to be able to work around in the environment and found and SysUpdater tool in the windows folder. My options to update is OS, Logo, Logo2, Boot, App and options are Reset, Format, Update, Exit. So that said looks like everything interfaces with the radio OS and acts like a switch with CE and DVD Rom drive interfaces as FMode said. looks like in another forum they figured out to get active sync working with USB on the CE side take a look if you know how to read spanish. http://www.radio-multimedia.com/foro...hp?topic=345.0

Ever since I laid Eyes on these devices, i started thinking that they should operate in much the same way as the windows mobile phones, but to my dismay, they dont. realistically there must be a way to get into the bootloader for the CE system (much like windows mobile phones have a bootloader) if it were possible to launch some kind of executable that could get you into the CE shell, I'd say much can be done from there. - Just don't look at me to do it!

    oooh ooh...look what i found

    http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/foru...s=15&tid=13269

as above i have got a chinese car stereo and for the navigation part of it it was using r66 which i have changed to igo because in the navigation menu of the device it lets you choose a path to the exe , this will be most helpfull in accessing the ce shell i believe , only i have a few questions

this device has no way to connect to a pc , all i can do is put files onto the sd card , and on the sd card there is no windows folder , only my igo folder at the moment , i assume all i need to do is copy explorer.exe for windows ce 5 to the sd card and launch it from the navigation menu of the device and ill be into ce , but where can i get explorer , also i read that there are other applications which can locate and start the explorer which is already on the device , again where can i find these , i realise everybody who comes here is asking for help on this and that . i think i already know what to do just cant find the friggin files i need

alright my last reply, them I will leave this thread alone. so the 7" lilliput = 800 x 480 (WVGA) the newer HTC windows Mobile Phones = WVGA....Most of the phones have Bluetooth and gps built in, some even have FM radio! They play multimedia etc. and are interfaced with touch screens - Anyone see where I am going with this. If there is a way to get the device to integrate with a WCGA lilliput (accepting inputs and properly outputting to screen) then all you need is a box to house an amplifier that accepts sound from the built in sound card (route a mic into the roof of the car) and Chaching - a highly capable, fully customizable Smart Car In Dash All in One everything you want interface!

Oh, and with a bluetooth keyboard you can type into the device too!

Now can someone help make this happen? Clearly the toughest part is getting the 7" screen to interface with the device - all else is cake!

Thanks for a view inside - some high quality pics ?
I never had a unit like this but I played round with them at a fair.

Not only to your dismay - it our dismay
We all want a professional customizable car infotainment system ? We would prefer the x86 route (more power) but the ARM route would also be fine !

I guess the ARM board is generic embedded board which is bought and connected to the DVD board (which is also bought) - Find out the original manufacturer...

and: xda-developers is a good place to start.

If you can start an exe you can also install the .net compact framework and your own Frontend... and I guess you can find the serial interface (5V TTL)...
But the problem accessing the hardware connected to the DVD board is still there...

    Hey guys,
I used to be in the carpc scene and switched to one of these chinese all in one units with winCE5.0. It is so much easier & much less tinkering all the time. It just works. After I mapped it to boot to a copy of explorer it opened the whole thing up. Sure, it is in chinese, and I don't know how to read it, but if you are familiar with windows in general, it is easy to navigate around. Take a look at my post here:

In there I posted instructions for a custom GPS boot menu & all from a GPS boot SD card. It was easy to add Navigation, GPS guages & graphs, auto maintenance software, games, system files etc. I still use the head units multimedia, but that works out fine. If you really want to customize your own multimedia stuff, you can easilly add that software to the menu.

Is this the type of stuff you are looking at?

PS: There is also a link here where a user has updated the whole unit's firmware to customized graphics, depending on which unit you have. Unfortunately that one doesn't work with mine.

So, given it's a WIN CE device, isn't it possible to load something like a Pocket PC interface on it? From what you are saying, the WINCE is there for nothing more than just running the navigation software. If that's the case, then there has to be a way to get another CE based OS on there, or even flash it to an English CE OS.

With pocket PC's there is a boot loader that can be entered with the proper software on an SD card. How much memory do these units have on board? I really like this concept, especially because there is a beautiful unit for the Touareg.
