Thread: Convert MP3 to OGG?

Mike, keep in mind, an Ogg file will only be higher fidelity than an MP3 if its made from a CD or a wave file. An Ogg file converted from an mp3, will be lower fidelity than the mp3 was to start with.

Converting the mp3 file to a wave first, won't help either. Once the audio information is lost, its lost forever!

I couldn't imagine the fidelity of anything sampled at 64kbs being very good, so I did a quick test. I encoded one of my favorite songs, from a wave, into a 64kbs mp3 and a 64kbs Ogg. Then I listened to them all, comparing both the mp3 and ogg to the original wave.

The results were surprising! I'm not sure I could even tell the difference between the original and the ogg. The mp3, on the other hand, was virtually unlistenable, sounding like something being played on an old transistor radio. I can't believe there's this much difference between these two formats.

Looks like I'll be doing some serious Ogg encoding!

CD Copy (http://www.cdcopy.sk) will do mp3->OGG conversion, but yeah, it's going to be a quality drop no matter how you cut this cake.

In case anyone is interested, I thought I'ld post the 64 kbps Ogg and MP3 that I compared so that you could do your own comparison test.

Hi mp3hombre, I've been trying out Monkey's Audio for about a month now. It is a lossless compression technique, but unfortunately, it only compresses by less than 50% in most cases. That makes it great for archiving old LP's and tapes, but Ogg and MP3 still have the advantage for carrying maximum tune-age in a portable or car environment.
