Thread: Vista 64 bit driver problem

Vista x64 does not allow you to install non-signed drivers. So unless those manufacturers want to spend $$$$$ signing them, it wont work.

You can remove this check for all of Vista, but every M$ update it will overwrite the hack, and consequentally your drivers will not work anymore.

You can always switch to a better operating system...

But yes, you are stuck if you stick with Vista until Microsoft decides to allow non-signed drivers. Even then, you need someone to make 64bit drivers since Vista x64 cannot use 32bit drivers under emulation as XP could if you forced it.

If you like Vista, use the 32bit version. It will be easier

If you honestly think you are getting a boost of speed with a 64 bit OS running 32bit applications, you are wrong. 32bit applications on a 64bit OS are slower than a 32bit native.

I know of no programs that are in use on a CarPC that are optimized for 64bit, so it is wasted money there.

Also 8Gb in the car is wasted. How much RAM do you really need to play a song?!

I think you are going from one extreme to another. Just take out some RAM, format to a better OS, and be done with it, no more money spent.

And RAM only makes things faster when it can be used instead of a pagefile. Also it will take longer to hibernate since it has to write all 8Gb to the HD.

I would suggest a dual boot for you. Install XP 32bit as well. For work boot Vista, for Car, boot XP.

And if you are using those programs which I use as well (though mostly CS3 and also AutoCAD and such), XP will be faster no doubt including your video rendering. Time is money, so longer waiting to render takes more money....

Again 64 is not faster unless you get a 64bit program which I have yet to see any for the car. It may be for high end programs that compile for it, but not for any you will need for CarPC function, so your second install does not need to be 64... And where did you hear this 'more secure' thing? That is not true at all. 64 just means it can do 64 parallel pipes instead of 32... Nothing to do with software security. If you mean nothing runs on 64 hence more secure, that is the apple argument there!

If you want a seperate solution, I would look into that new unit the mp3car store has with the dual core, double din PC (that replaced the G4 from a while ago). It is slick.

I dont bash vista without reason. For the reasons you said, vista = bad choice.

I have a laptop with Vista... I have a HTPC with Vista. All others including car are XP though. And 1 old AT with a dos shell.
