do you have
creat 8.3 filenames for dos turned off in xp ?
I am running windows XP, with a removable hard drive bay controlled by a RAID IDE Controller in my desktop computer.
I am running windows 98 on my carputer.
Up until about a week ago everything worked fine with this current setup. I would remove the HD from the carputer, pop it in my desktop machine, copy files over, and be set to go. Now, for some reason, if I copy any files over (including new versions of media engine) ALL of the files become corrupted on my carputer hard drive. I see them fine in windows XP, I play them from the folders I copied them too just fine within my desktop system. But as soon as I pop the hard drive back into my carputer, the filesnames become garbage letters, and media engine crashes when their directory is chosen, and I can't even see half of them.
Pop the hard drive BACK into my winxp driven desktop, and voila, the files are back to normal, playable etc.
What gives? I cant copy anything new to my carputer! help!

i had the same thing happen to me with my setup of XPpro and Win95. Funny thing is i couldn't figure out what had happened since everything was running fine untill the same thing as you happened, that was a while ago thou. About 3 weeks ago it happened on my XPpro and Win95 (different machine than before) . I went to play some songs and it couldnt find them, further looking i noticed the same thing you did, i then shut down and checked on the XP machine and everthing was fine. i retried again on the Win95 setup and no problem. I stilll to this day don't know what had happened and how it was fixed, but your not the only one.

could it have to do with the hard drive being FAT16? XP likes to have FAT32 or NTFS I think. I could be wrong.

mp3car system is currently FUBAR and finances do not allow for a correction of that situation
Real computer hackers use a rotary cutting tool on their motherboard.
It's a FAT32 hard drive..
This is really weird...I hope it 'works itself out' just like it did with you...![]()

When you said IDE RAID controller, you mean like a Promise or Highpoint onboard chip or pci car (not 3ware or adaptec)? And you're not hotswapping the drive, right? Id run a scandisk on the drive from xp and see what it finds.

When I say IDE Raid controller, i mean a PCI addon card that controls the hard drive, making it quicker then running two hard drives off the same IDE cable.Originally posted by MP3DUB

Im not hot swapping the drives.
WinXP doesn't come with scandisk, it just comes with Defrag. I just finished a defrag on my winxp hard drive, i'll try it on the carputer hd.

ScanDsk is there, just renamed...
right click on the "drive letter" in explorer, select the tools tab, and select "check now" under Error-Checking.
Check both boxes in the popup dialog. (auto fix file system errors, and scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors). Then click start.
It might tell you that it can't take exclusive control of the drive and ask if you want to schedule the scan on the next reboot.
If you like command line, you can use 'chkdsk'. Yes, it sounds like the old DOS version, but it is really the new multi-stage NT/XP scandisk. Use /r (recover bad sectors) and /f (fix problems)
Latest update on this:
Ran scandisk on both hard drives, on both machines. No change, they were still corrupted. So I had a feeling that it was WinXP doing it. So I dropped into dos from a bootup disk and copied them from the command line, and low and behold, they were not corrupted, but their long file names were stripped and they had names like Coldpl~1.mp3. I dont want to have to copy files over in DOS and have no idea why WIN XP is doing this to my mp3s when I copy them from drive to drive. Any Ideas?
