    XP sleak install

Has anyone out there attemped to do a xp lite type of install. I was wondering if people know of a good site, or info on booting without the shell? Like a system.ini in a windows 98 environment?

Changing the logo.sys boot screen like 98?

Stripping out ie6 and other stuff we don't need?

I can't tell you much about a minimal install, but I doubt that you can do much as far as removing IE goes. Each newer version of Windows seems to become more dependant on using IE as the core component in navigating the machine.

You really can't do much. Hacking the boot logos is easy (relatively speaking), but I cut the services that winxp needs to run down to a bare minimum, and it doesn't boot any noticibly faster with them disabled. And the best that MS can do in reguards to IE6 (court setlement) is make something else the default browser. If you want a reeeeely small install of xp, you'll have to aquire XP embedded from Microsoft.

Yeah, it seems that for really small installs and "embedded like" Pc's the best option is Linux.

It's a shame that the software available for Linux is less than in windows and the drivers for the hardware too, making it a not viable option as OS for many of us

Thats what I thought. I'll just have to use 98, as my pci dlink wireless card wont run in windows 95 - which I got down to 35MB!

the solution for XP lite from microsoft is of course "XP embedded"..... the 98lite guys (which are from OZ btw) are still working on a 2000/XP lite according to their website, altho thats been the case for over 6 months now... so dont hold your breath!

personally im sticking to w98. I would never again chuck it on a desktop PC, but for a mp3car style OS thats not getting software installed/deinstalled/etc.... there is nothing wrong with it....

I got Win98 down to 37mb using an 98lite install, then hacking out the rest by hand. The 9x systems are by far the easiest to shrink. I binned my XP Embedded disc months ago, even though I got it down to 200mb, it still didint boot any quicker.

I am running Win XP on my unit. I have killed services that I did not need and have uninstalled some of the MS software. At 1st I wanted to take the browers out. I got very close. The problem is that there are a lot of apps that use it. My machine takes more time to post than it does to boot. If you want more info ask and I will get it to you. I also know most of the files that you can remove to make a smaller footprint.
