    Front end features list

and comparison.. + maybe wish list?
So im trying to figure out which of the front ends support indipendent monitor assignments and i realized, i've basically got to sort through the changelog for most of em, or read between the lines on the commercial ones.

so my first thought was of course search around, see if someone else already asked, Do i search for "fe" or "front end" monitor assignment? blech.. ok.. no, I'm just going to ask.. well, ok, but then what does the next guy search for? oo tags, hey, let's do something useful.

I know there are more, but keeping my notes in my brain causes me to be lazy. ha ha
someone please please help me flesh this out more.

Is this table in the wiki?

LinuxICE uses the bluez stack for bluetooth, nGhost for media playback(mplayer/phonon powered). It is ipod compatible (reads the mp3 files from the drive). Zune also if it shows up as a normal drive like the ipod does. File syncing is handled by a proximity rsync setting. GPS via Navit. OBDII via nCarInfo and obdgpslogger. App store, sure! We have a free app repository. Multiple monitors yes, but you'll have to hack to get it setup.

EDIT: I found a stub in the wiki for a frontend comparison.

I had created a fancy table with info in the old wiki, i don't know what happened to it though .

far from an ipod specialist, but i believe you have to have your ipod/zune hacked to show up like that.

is it integrated into the fe, or a web page you should probably know about if you've installed it? that's why i left it as is.

The last iPod I had (4g) showed up in windows and Linux as a removable drive without any hacking. I assume newer iPods are the same. There are 2 methods used to read media info from the ipod, 1) a raw filescan + ID3 tag read, and 2) read the ipod xml database which is what itunes uses. The generic solution is #1 which is identical to the method nGhost would use to view songs on any usb stick.

There is an app called synaptic which lets you install and uninstall apps. This is not ideal for the car but it works and it's available now. We will have an actual UI for the app store in the future.

hmm, that'd be pretty nice if they finally decided to be real devices.. i know my iphone 3gs only shows the drive portion for the images directory, but the iphones are slightly more stupid that the real thing.

will it allow apps to be installed that the user cannot interact with? like say you find a game and install it, does it automatically put the icons in the FE and make it useable, or is it just the package delivery system for linux that does 0 checking past "did it run?"

Now that you mention that, IIRC, my ipod had an option to allow it to show up as a removable drive? From there I could access the folder that contained all the music (which i think was hidden on windows by default).

Yes, if you install a game, it'll show up in Apps->Games in the frontend when you reboot.
