Voyager: testers needed to try Voyager OBD

    What it is:
Voyager is an Android app. It runs on Android 2.0 (Currently just the Droid). It talks to your vehicle's onboard computer and logs data such as speed, trouble codes, etc. see Wikipedia for a full list. It saves the data and makes it available to other apps in Android so they can add realtime vehicle data support in their apps (Think: carputer apps for the droid).

Eventually I'll add an interface to Voyager to upload the data to a web site where you can graph and analyze your vehicle's metrics.

Currently there aren't any other apps that interface with Voyager. Right now it logs the data to a database and lets you view some of the data from the main menu. Over time, we will develop ways to analyze that data and use it in other apps.

What you need to use it:
Bluetooth OBD adapter choice 1 / choice 2 And a phone running Android 2.0 (Currently just The Droid); (and a car with an OBD port!)

    What kind of testing?
we need to try running Voyager and make sure it works with your car and bluetooth OBD adapter. If not, I'll work with you to add support.

To all Android programmers: if you're interested in writing an app that uses this data, I'll work with you to get the content provider working. Its very easy.

    Willing to test

I'd like to add OBD information to an app I'm working on. I'd be happy to test your app. Is ABS information available through the interface? I'm shopping for an OBD bluetooth adapter and wonder if there is anything limited with the cheaper one that you reference? I have a Driod and 3 vehicles that can be used to test.

    Hi Droidfan.
The only problem I've had with the cheaper one is that on on my car it has a hard time doing a "monitor all" where it sniffs all traffic on the CAN bus. There is a ton of data streaming by on my car's CAN bus at any moment and the device's buffer gets overflowed rather quickly unless I add an ECU source filter. This may happen with other devices too but I'm not sure because I just have the one.

ABS info not present yet. What types of info would you like? I can look into adding support.

So far, Voyager offers the following stuff via content provider:

    * Scanning of standard mode 1 pids (wikipedia obdii codes for a list)
    * List trips, including Start time, stop time, etc.
    * Return all data gathered during a trip
    * Currently trip data for 2 weeks is kept.
    * add/remove bluetooth address of bt device

Your app can query the content provider (content://com.gtosoft.voyager/BLAH) where BLAH is one of the exposed data types.

What type of OBD Features would you like to add to your app?

In addition to standard things like speed and gas consumption, I'd like to track events like Anti-lock brakes, airbag deployment (don't know how I would test this one!), etc. I'm learning from this website how non standardized this industry is, so we'll see how practical this is. I've ordered the BT device from DealExtreme.

I'm not planning a commercial product (yet). I'm the coach of a Jr. High Lego League Robotics team where the research project is related to transportation and the team's ideas make use of OBDII. I was hoping to take advantage of my hobby of programming for Android to test their ideas.

Was the hardware interface difficult to accomplish on the Droid?

Could you add this as "Choice 3"?

My apologies for the late response. Work has been sucking up all of my free time so I haven't had much time to play.

Trying to tie a pretty bow on it before it goes out to the world. Official launch date is March 1. I'll try and get something together for testers before that.

I got a little bogged down working on the class-2 bus, trying to add support for controlling stuff. I'm gona back-burner that for a bit until I get Voyager out to market, then I'll add features after letting people try what we already have.

@jtiwood - yes that won't be a problem, your device should work no problem.

@hummerlite - looking forward to having you try it on a nice cross-section of cars.

    Testing and Developing

    Hi Regulatre

I am in a new project that requires the logged data of OBD, and while doing some research I found your project.
I saw that you are requesting people to test it and to work with to expand the project.
So I would like to do both of them, please let me know how we can arrange this.

    Thanks

Voyager has been released. On the market find it as "VoyagerConnect".

I'm working on Voyager Dash, which uses VoyagerConnect. Dash will be open source, and intended to help jumpstart other apps using Voyager.
