    Define User Interface

    I am working on a paper defining CarPuter User Interface.
    So give my your two cents.
    What best defines Carputer User Interface?
    What is the very first thing that comes to mind.
    What are the advantages/disadvantages of each type?
    Touch screen or tactical?
    Speak now or forever hold your peace.

    In one word: Tailored.

    That is, the carputer UI is basically first and foremost a relatively big display, which offers a visual interface tailored for the user, it aspires to be neat because it's for the most part designed, trimmed, customized and endlessly tinkered with. The UI grows with the user, as one learns, one modifies. Again and again, if need be. That's why you know your screens better than anything else - isn't that visualization window a bit to the right in the frame? Isn't the media loading slower today?" -, you can tell what's in there at a glance: how's that for interfacing?

    Touchscreen comes later, and for those like me who uses steering wheel and/or remote buttons, it's secondary.

    The screen is the most important part of the UI, but the customization of course starts much earlier in the choice of a front end, skins, plugins, etc. That means that in the Carputer User Interface everything is tailored for the user by the user, and it just resolves itself in the display.

    I discussed this quite a bit at tonights meeting but i'm gonna say none at all. The best human/car interaction would occur with a voice controlled system. No screens to look at, buttons to press or anything at all that would distract the driver from the most important important thing-driving.

    What about the deaf? Without any screens, the only way to get feedback from the car would be to have it speak back to you.

    Perhaps a mix of both would be in order. I could definitely see how voice controlled could have an advantage, but sometimes I just like to be able to see everything that's going on in a glance. Perhaps the kids are asleep in the back seat and I don't want to wake them. Rather than attempt to whisper to my PC and have it not recognize what I'm saying, a touch or button interface would be much better.

    However I really have grand dreams of a gesture interface with a HUD.

    WOW, talk about opening up a can of worms!

    DEFINE CARPUTER INTERFACE - First, there isn't just one. Its all about the man/machine interactions. These interactions occur numerous ways using every one of our senses except taste (If you do I don't want to know about it). Back in my aircraft design days, I interviewed hundred of pilots asking them about cockpit ergonomics and the most prevalent answer is just what RipplingHurst said, "Tailored!" In the aircraft vernacular, that meant tailored to the pilot and situation - takeoff, cruise, landing, attack, air to air fighting, air to ground fighting or bombing or approach or evasion.
    An anecdote to emphasize my point: The F-16 has a huge HUD used for 80% of flight info and a seat that angles back 30 degrees. On landing, most pilots sit up away from the seatback to see the ground, but the HUD wasn't designed for that situation and therefore all that data was invisible at that position. Situational awareness is a must to consider in any man/machine interface.

    I view a Carputer as not much different in its man/machine interactions. RipplingHurst said, "tailored for the user, by the user, and it just resolves itself in the display" which I would agree with given the current state of the technology used in this hobby. In some situations, voice I/O is best (personally, I don't like my music cutting in and out for every command), in others I use my joystick capable of up to 128 commands/macros (when I lay my hand on my joystick I know where every button is and what each does without lookin - tactile). In still others, I or another passenger may use the touchscreen. Sometimes I could care less about the screen or audio player and just want to hear the Nav voice so I set the audio over the headunit for my passengers and route the Nav audio to my bluetooth headset. Nav has always been screen-based, the screen is the primary feedback that the commands you initiate are acted upon, but with all the external inputs now available like TPMS, V1 Interface, parking sensors, etc., the screen is also the focal point for monitoring systems as well. Lastly, everyone knows computers run on smoke - when the smoke escapes and you smell smoke its done.

    The ultimate would be an AI controlled HMD with direct mind control, i.e., ala "FireFox" movie with Clint Eastwood - think it and the computer responds. Think a command and its instantly accomplished; think a screen layout and the AI reconfigures what you see; think about your cross check and all monitored systems are polled with any abnormalities displayed. That's the first thing that comes to my mind.

    I'll leave this one up to you to find by searching through the forums. No one interface is the end-all be-all. They are all compromises. Everybody's got a different opinion and personal preference is the key. What is a disadvantage to some is an advantage to others. And lets not disregard the automobile's configuration/environment and how it is a major limiting factor in all this.

    I could easily go into every little detail on ergonomics, but that would be writing your paper for you so I'll stop now. I would recommend you research the vast stores of data on man/machine interface/interaction and then tailor what you've learned to specifially address the uses of a CarPuter. Good Luck.

    Ok maybe this is over my head, like most things but when one asks to define something I find its easier to break it down.

    User - a person who makes use of a thing; someone who uses or employs something

    interface -
    1 - a program that controls a display for the user (usually on a computer monitor) and that allows the user to interact with the system

    2 - computer circuit consisting of the hardware and associated circuitry that links one device with another

    Carputer - is a general purpose computing platform installed in a vehicle

    Sssoooo I guess a Carputer User Interface is a general purpose computing platform installed in a vehicle that a person makes use of by a program or hardware...

    Did I win?

    And if this is for a paper do we get credit?

    I dont know about else where, But here the deaf, hard of hearing. And a certain rating of sight can not drive do to common things. Deaf need to be able to hear emergency vehicles.
    Sight must be able to see a certain distant, Know what a colour is with our a reference.

    I dont think a speak recon/generator engine is to be ruled out at all.
    This would cut cost on hardware and time in development as you need no input apart from a mic, And no visual. Just a speech recon engine.
