USB external hard drive disconnects, then reconnects on wake from sleep in Windows 7

    Hi,

I have a laptop with an external USB enclosure connected to it. When I put the computer to sleep, upon resume, the hard drive will disconnect, then reconnect, causing issues for any application that was accessing files on that drive. The weird thing is that this occurs on both of my laptops, however it does not occur on my desktop computer. All computers are running Windows 7.

Has anyone ever experienced this issue before? This seems like it has to be pretty common, however I have spent the last couple of days searching and have come up with nothing, other than a few other people having the same problem, but no solution. The only thing I can think of is that Windows is resetting the USB controllers on the laptops when waking from resume (which is not USB standards compliant: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...56(WS.10).aspx), however that article seems to indicate that Windows will not do that. But this seems to be the only explanation I can come up with. One difference between my desktop and 2 laptops is that both laptops are Intel chipsets, while my desktop has an AMD chipset. So maybe the AMD USB drivers are behaving differently?

One also thing to note is that this only seems to be happening with this hard drive. If I have a USB thumb drive attached to the laptops, it does not disconnect and reconnect. Also, I have an external sound card that does not disconnect and reconnect either.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

    My primary laptop specs:
    Dell Inspiron 6000
    Windows 7 x86
External USB enclosure with 2.5" WD 250GB SATA hard drive

    Thanks!

under power configuration, there is a usb setting that'll affect this.
also in the hardware configuration, you can choose which device goes to sleep or stay alive.
    hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply, however I have changed every imaginable setting in the Power Settings, but to no avail. It seems like it is not being affected by any of the options in Power Settings.

I ran a USB monitoring tool and it looks like the device is getting a surprise removal upon resume from sleep.

I also checked the differences between the USB ports in my laptop and desktop. Both the laptops use Intel host controllers, which are EHCI and UHCI, while my desktop has OHCI ports. I'm really beginning to think that this is the difference/problem.

I also attached a Seagate FreeAgent external 3.5" USB drive to my laptop, and it exhibited the same behavior as my 2.5" USB external drive.

The 2.5" drive is self-powered, however the 3.5" drive I tried last night is not self-powered, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.
