    Question speedin up win 98

my windows 98 boots very slow, and i was wondering on what i could do to speed it up. i've been researching on how to do, and i only have winamp as my only application starting up. i've deleted a lot of files on the computer already. i want to use the comp for playing mp3s and dvds for now. i have a toshiba laptop and i can't get into the bios by pressing the f2 key at start up. i'll be happy with a 40 second boot time. my boot time is at 50 plus seconds, i just timed it at 57 seconds.

I assume you checked the BIOS for things to turn off. I know laptops usually don't have a lot of extras to disable but I just shaved off 12 secconds taking out a RAID controller I wasn't using anymore.

You haven't provided enough information to know if this will work for you, but have you considered making your application for playing mp3/DVD (ie AutoPlay or MediaEngine) your shell, rather than explorer?

i hope to get gps later on in the future, but gps, dvds and mp3s will seem to be all that i will use the laptop for. i'm kinda inclined to use winamp cause i took time and putting the playlist info for a bunch of my songs.

also, i hold down the f2 key or ctrl when the comp boots and i can't get into the bios. do the other windows os boot faster or would installing win 98 on it from scratch be the best option?

    Things to try:

    Disable/remove network hardware/software
Disable any harware you do not use.
You should not need to run config.sys or autoexec.bat
Check your harddisk for errors then Defrag.
Run MSCONFIG.EXE check the under startup, look for any programs running you don't need.
Look at your SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI make sure they are nor running any thing you don't need.

All system are not the same so you will have to experement.

Also your system may be looking for or running a program that is not working so windows may be waiting for it to timeout.

NOTE: DONOT delete any file, if you donot know what it is.
    Rename them i.e. netsys.exe netsys.exx
This way you can restore the file.

Hope some of this helps you.

    IDE Flashdrive

Have you considered an IDE flashdrive for the OS alone to speed up booting?

Its true that flashdrives have 0 seek time, but their transfer rates are much slower than even ata33 drives. Win98 can only be made to boot so fast on an old laptop. What's the hardware specs of the hardware?
