    Mickz what kind of temp readings you getting with your i3 on the z77-n board? I have the i5-3570 and am running around 29c using a scythe kozuti low profile cooler. And on a Jetway nf9f-h61 with i7-2600 and same cooler same temps. Just curious. SNO

    Hi SNO, this one is strange, with the i3 I was seeing 38c and with a low power i5 I'm seeing the same. In the Car-PC MB they show around 29c. The MB temp shows 42c on this new MB. Thing is, the CPU controlled fan is throttled back to inaudible and CPU HS feels cold, MB chipset HS is barely warm to touch. Those reading are via the bios and from HWinfo64 as I don't use GB MB utility's. BTW I'm running the supplied CPU cooler.

    SNO most of my readings were taken during the hot part of the day, I just did a reading with a room temp of 26c and CPU (Bios) is 31c with the i5, and MB is 42c.

    Still playing around with a BETA version of BIOS for enhanced WIN-8 UEFI support. Start up time on my Desktop PC loaded to the hilt with SW is still around 13 to 14 seconds and blows out to 20 seconds with BIOS UEFI fast boot off. There is no way at present to enable optional Secure Boot setting.

    With BIOS Logo enabled you have just two screen display states at boot. The BIOS LOGO which displays right up until it flips to the METRO Screen. No bios text, blank screens, Win-8 loading or Win Logo displays.

    The first real problem with Windows 8 in a CAR-PC has come with the change in Cold Boot / Fast Boot Loading times for any applications in the Start-up folder or Registry RUN command. My FE, which normally loads in under 1.5 seconds is not being launched for around 5 to 10 seconds after the METRO screen appears. However if I boot and click the FE Shortcut the instant METRO or Desktop appears then it launches immediately.

    As others have reported, this behaviour is the same for any app that is Auto launched via the Start folder.

    On the Plus side, Hybrid-Sleep now works (for me). Never had this work with Win-7 and 2 Previous MB's, so this overcomes the Cold Boot (and Fast Start) problem with Start Menu APP launch times. Booting from Sleep allows me to resume in around 3 seconds from power on to Radio playing (that's almost twice as long as the old MB) or 14 seconds (hibernate) if power is lost during sleep state (CAR-PC PSU off timer trips). Full Hibernate loads as fast as Win-8's shortened Fast Start version of Hibernate when using an SSD.

    I'm going to upgrade the Car PC with this newer GA-77N WIFI MB and test Windows 8 PRO 64 with my SW and HW. I've had this 2nd new MB on a test bench for a few weeks trying all my hardware, software and drivers and the results are that everything works.

    I have a lot of USB devices including Mobile Phone module, Touch screen, 3 GPS receivers, DAB-FM module, Echo cancellation device, Optical DSP audio interface, Web Cameras and various vehicle interface micro processors. I have a HONDA factory OBDII interface module and Diagnostic software which was originally written for XP and it installs and runs perfectly.

    The big plus for me with Win8 is that Hybrid and Hybrid Sleep are perfect. Gone is that stupid Win7 window if resume fails for any reason and the need for a keyboard for (in my case) that very rare occasions.

    There is one big Minus with Win 8 and it's not Metro as that's so easy to set it up as a touch screen application launcher / Start Menu. It's the Cold boot User start-up program launch time.

    Unlike Windows 7, Win 8 (visual) faster launch is "partly" due to getting the Metro or Desktop to display before all window services have been finalised. Applications set to Auto-Start are delayed until Windows is fully set. Win 8 delays Start-up programs initialisation by up to 10 seconds. I found that I could shorten this to a few seconds by launching the FE (Front End) application via the Task Manager.

    Keeping in Mind that Hibernate is so stable and resume is fast because of the faster BIOS with this new MB so the FE is running in 13 seconds from power on. It's only the COLD Boot that's slightly annoying in Win8.

    BTW: You can if you like, still set the FE as a shell and boot straight into the FE, no Metro no Desktop. The Win8 shell "explorer.exe" can be started from the FE or auto started when the FE is exited but only if the explorer shell is also loaded as before.

    I finally found an entry that works for the Shell entry in the Registry:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

    shell

    explorer.exe /run, C:\fe_directory\fe_app.exe

    Normally the entry is just explorer.exe.

    If something goes wrong and you get a totally black screen, pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up an option menu where you can log off or click on Task Manager and from there you can run Regedit to change the entry back or simply start the explorer shell. As always --- BACK UP THE REGISTRY --- and make a RESTORE point before playing around.

    You can force Win8 to auto switch from Metro to the desktop on a cold boot or when logging off and on.

    1. Make a new text file and place the following commands in it:

    [Shell]
    Command=2
    IconFile=Explorer.exe,3
    [Taskbar]
    Command=ToggleDesktop

    2. Rename the file extension from xxxxx.txt to xxxxx.scf

    3. Place this in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

    When Windows is fully loaded the Metro interface will switch to the Desktop.

    So overall I really like this MB with Win8. The built in Bluetooth finds my Bluetooth GPS every time and built in WIFI instantly connects to the home router. Both work from sleep, hibernate, shutdown or restart.

    A few weeks more for testing before I swap it over.

    Found a registry key that decreases the auto start up time for user applications.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Serialize]
    "StartupDelayInMSec"=dword:00000000

    1. This key was not in my system and it has made a huge difference to my Audio level control application "Breakaway" this app was still loading after the FE had started from Task Scheduler, now it's loaded just as the FE is starting.

    2. Removing the FE app from Task Scheduler and placing a shortcut in the Start up folder now launches it even faster than using a Task Scheduler.

    Happy

    EDIT: NO space in the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER key in CurrentVersion. It keeps getting inserted in that line in my post?

    Mickz,

    Thanks for all this great info. I would like to poing out that you are using Win8 Pro and some of your suggestions are not available in Win8 Home.

    Hi Dave, yes I should mention that more often. I find this problem when searching, most Window 8 sites and forums only refer to Win 8 and not the different version differences for most of this info. Guess Win8 being new and in my case only playing with one version makes it's difficult to know what applies. I'll make a note on the postings in any case.

    Noticed a few people having trouble finding the Start Folder in Win 8.

    Open Run and enter shell:startup

    FYI. I've been looking for a simple way to reduce a mouse click to select a running desktop app if windows decides to switch to Metro. Not a problem when I'm using it with a Front-end but it is an annoyance for lots of people when using windows itself. Yes I know there are a number of way to do from Metro but this is elegant and useful.

    I'm not one on radically changing the OS and as I said I use the Metro interface quite a lot. I found this little gem. It allows you to display the desktop taskbar on the metro screen with virtually no other changes. Only proviso is not to enable Auto-Hide in Win8 taskbar properties. Also allows you to resize the Metro screen. This could be a handy app on a small Car PC screen.

    I'm using it and there appears to be no glitches so far but of course use at your own risk, it's a small standalone app with no install. Download link is on post 34 on the page. NOTE it may only work on 64bit?
