IMHO the Metro screen can be converted into a one click Start menu and/or a launch screen for all your Window application that normally clutter the desktop or the Start menu.

Almost all the main window setting including the command prompt are available with one right click of the mouse and selectable from a small popup menu, Win8 fast start logic and stability are really welcome in a car PC environment.

If you ignore some of the hyperventilating crap written about Metro by some PC mags and testers you may find the way you can use the Metro screen and how quick it is to access quite rewarding.

Anyway, after using the release version for a week or so there is no way I will go back to Win7 or any other version of Windows (I used the pre-release versions for quite some time as well).

I changed to WIN-8 from Win7 for faster execution and load times and the "under the hood" code changes and not for the Metro interface. I too believed the crap about the world ending without the old start menu. I mainly work from the Desktop and find the Metro screen (Menu) easy to modify and take advantage of, even when mostly used to launch Desktop applications.
Alright well I finally picked up my SSD so Windows 8 is up and running on the carpc. I have to say that your post is spot on.

I've found everything I needed really easily. The Metra screen comes be default with plenty of crap, but once you customize it I find it a great change.

FYI, hitting the Windows key and X brings up a menu for all the useful utilities. Task manager, control panel, command prompt, device manager, et cetera are all there.

I don't have a front end set up yet so this isn't a final figure, but I'm at music playing in 15 seconds from a cold start. I can't get out of the driveway before music is playing, it's fantastic.

I won't be upgrading my other laptop to Windows 8 just because I don't think it's necesary, but I won't buy anything new that isn't run on it. I don't see any reason even for a non touch computer to come without it. All my tinkering so far is without the touchscreen, just mouse and keyboard, and it's still pretty smooth. I don't miss the start menu at all. Once you adjust to 8 I think everything is easier to get to, not harder.
Computer is in the car, but in a very "raw" install right now.

Have you tried Classic Shell with Win 8?

Makes Windows 8 Almost bearable. But I do run into issues with Win 8 not liking drivers and some other stuff. It is also buggy with alot of the current software so I would not run it on my carpc. I actually loaded it first and without a full on touch device it is not worth the effort. Win 7 has been around a while and is well supported and for most anything posted on these forums there are drivers for Win7 but only MAYBE for Win8.

Well my perspective is different, there are some of us who don't / haven't and will not use the old Windows Start menu and haven't done so for years because it is so useless for anything more than a hand full of installed programs.

I use Win 8 every day and program under it and have done for some time. Every old application (even one PRE XP) and all my old hardware works. The only applications that have problems are ones where the Programmer has assumed that the OS or system parameters would never change or has gone outside of the API to access the OS at a much lower level.

I have Windows 8 64 in the CAR-PC running all manner of USB SW and Hardware devices, with the exception of the latest Prolific USB drivers breaking some older USB hardware, not a Win8 problem but using the previous version of drivers fixes this, everything works. As far as NON touch screen use goes (Mouse KB) I find Win 8 as easy or easier to use than Win 7 (it is basically the same OS after all). What is called the Metro interface can be used as a large button Launch/start menu and comes in handy if/when you need to go outside of the FE when using a small screen in a Vehicle.

I read somewhere else that apparently blue tooth is not currently compatible with Win8. I am unable to use Win8 with my screen because of it not being seen as a touch device. Unless I want to have a mouse available it is totally worthless with my hardware. The screen has a thin bezel around it but it is enough that I can not access the right side of the screen to pull up the charms. If I go to the desktop I also can not go back to the start menu. With Win8 the start menu is big enough I can access it via touching it.

I am running Win8 64 bit on this desktop and I have had problems finding drivers for things that work. My printer for instance has a constant error and it is a currently available HP all in one network capable printer that is on my local network. All of my computers can access all features of it fine BUT my Win8 machine. Have not found a solution for it. Not sure what doesn't work but it tells me my network connector to the printer has failed and if I close it then it comes right back. I have had issues with other stuff as well.

So yea, although I have 2 copies of Win8 Pro I will drop this computer back to Win7 pro when I upgrade it. And until I get a capacitive screen it is my understanding I won't be able to use Win8 as it is intended.

Well this is going back to exactly the same problem I had with Win7 when I went to 64Bit. Developers have had enough time to get drivers sorted for Win8 but are too lazy or simply don't care to invest.

I hardy ever use the Charm hot spots even on the desktop. I made a desktop Icon to switch to Metro (Start menu) when needed. My 8" screen worked even with the Win7 drivers and works exactly the same as in Win7, as touch screen mouse, no gestures which I would never use in a car PC anyway.
