If you're gonna "go for the gold" try to do everything Markus Zhender's winamp plugin does, but under DOS.
no can do buddy, my c++ days are long forgotten, everything I do now is in visual basic

    Character LCD Program Features

Some of the handiest features that I have in my custom VB App, which you might want to include are:
    - ability to browse through your hard drive (*.mp3 of course) with the keypad
    - when a song is highlighted you can either play it right away or enqueue it
    - auto shutdown - automatically shutdown after the current song is finished.
    - control the EQ (if using winamp)
    - last song recall - like last channel recall on a TV remote

The browsing is the single most handy feature in my experience. I wasn't able to find a program that would do it reliably so I had to write my own.

Other features which I will be implementing later, would be
to be able to play songs which haven't been listened to in a while, and songs which I have just downloaded (based on the filedate) - similar to those Portable MP3 players.

    bombboyer,
My program is pretty much unconfigurable and unusable without code modifications as it is highly customized and poorly written.
I am in the process of cleaning it up. It sounds like Frodo is developing an application that would be suitable for general use.

    Frodo,
One thing which may be obvious but is important, is to separate the player control from the LCD output. Even though your initial program may only support MO displays, using general calls like LCD_Clear(), LCD_WriteString(string), etc. with the implemenations in another module, would allow you to easily port it to 44780 parallel, or Noritake parallel/serial displays by only changing those functions. I am in the process of changing my app to support a newly purchased Noritake VFD (was previously using a 44780 parallel), and doing it that way has made it easier.

That is a good idea, I try to make my stuff as reusable as possible, but sometimes I forget, so this is a good reminder.

that is what I have. Im going to use it to make a HUD (heads up display). that will show visualisations or song titles/ect. Since Im building a custom showcar Im going to redesign the dash to embed it in there. I know it wont be a true HUD because I cant find an ODBI interface for a PC and I have no idea which wire to the cars ECU to pull the data from. So basically I can see the song titles on my windshield @ night.

    frodo,
i would be very interested in a nice simple app for browsing my mp3 library by artist, album, genre, year, most played etc..

    I currently use a hd44780 4x20 display and the winamp plugin http://www.markuszehnder.ch/projects/lcdplugin/

I have been playing around with various lcd display options for my carpc..
found the winamp plugin pretty good cos its highly configurable for display formats to the screen and input by mappable button but found that the navigation could definatly be done better..

think for lcd program it should be
    1. simple intuitive to use, more like a car head unit.
    2. modular, input for different sources(keypads, joysticks, etc) and output to different display types (matrix, hitachi etc)

frodoplayerLCD.. i like the sound of that..

To be developped first for CLCD

There is no use for such a program that only works with a CLCD

I have this matrix orbital cldc mx2 and I only use it on my desktop so far as it has no real use in car yet. I have too many practical ideas to mention but i'll highlight the main feature that would be absolutely necessary.

Most people have only one monitor in their car, that we use for at least a gps and a media player. It is very annoying having to switch between those two as u already know while driving.

Annoying because when relying on the gps to get to some destination, we often need to switch from navigation to the media player screen if want to change music, but then we need to switch back to the gps screen again when driving and the eyes on the road. This makes it all very unpractical and dangerous since the priority is to be able to follow the gps at all times.

The answer to this is to have route information on the CLCD whenever the player is visible and music information on CLCD when the gps is visible. This solution would be a good place to start. After that whatever details or animated graphics can be added.
