What's the closest current front end to MediaCar?

Long time since I've lurked around these parts, but I've got a head-scratcher. I'm currently rebuilding my carPC due to a power supply failure and some other issues. It's been kicking with perfect reliability since 2004, so my software is pretty antiquated. Looks like MediaCar has been defunct since pretty much right after I started using it, so I think I'm in need of a new front end.

Thing is, though, I really like the way MediaCar works, particularly the playlist handling. Seems like every media player in existence now relies on a database and ID3 tags, which I hate. I don't have the time to clean up tags for thousands of music files and would really rather just browse by folder structure anyway. Is there such thing as a front end that uses a simple file tree for media handling?

Also, I have a BMW and use the Rolf Resler serial adapter to send steering wheel commands MediaCar. Is this possible with any current front ends?

I started just going down the list of front ends in that forum, but, now hours into that task, it seems like it would take me months of searching to answer these questions on my own (a lot of front ends to choose from, and it's hard to find the nuts and bolts of most without really digging into the forum threads). Thought maybe somebody would know offhand if there's something that'll work for me.

Worst case scenario, I'll see if I can't get XP running on the new machine and just keep using MediaCar.

    Thanks.

Road Runner is an in-car entertainment front end based on a similar but yet extended version of Mediacar (Rest in Peace) skins. Any existing Mediacar skin can be used in Road Runner and improved skins allow for extended features (asides from performance improvements).

The Road Runner software is now officially called Ride Runner to avoid conflicts with legal trademarks. You can find the newest versions of the software on the link below:
    NISU Automotive
TruckPC - gutted, being used for test setup
BoatPC - All in 1 in cuddy, N7 using VNC on dash, RR
    BlazerPC - Nexus 7 with Timur's USBROM
