setting sound card volume

I know it is possible to change the sound card volume via the speaker icon in the taskbar. However I want to change the sound card volume of the car computer without having to remove the computer from the car and hooking it up to a monitor.

I am thinking there must be an .ini file or something somewhere in the windows folder that stores the values of the sound card mixer. So when i take the removable hard disk out and put it in my main home computer I can tweak a file to change the volume on the mp3 computer. Does anyone know which file has the sound card volume settings in it?

Nope.

But here's a 3rd party solution that should do the trick:

Setvol.exe 100 (or any number between 0-100)
Make a shortcut for your optimal number and place it in the startup folder.

If you got a keyboard/numpad input, you can map hotkeys to the shortcut: setvol +10 (or -10) for your very own custom vol adjustment keys. If not, you can use girder to map whatever input u got for this use.

Google almost always holds the answer.

a program similar to the sound mixer in windows would be nice. Just need main volume and wav volume. Boxes where you type in percentages would be fine to control the loudness or use slider bars.

I'll write a program for you, but I need to know a definate method. I'll be gone for about a month on business, though. So I'll try to get posts during that time, but I doubt I'll be able to get online.

just a prog that when run from my main computer (booting XP) will allow me to set the wave and main volume on the slave harddrive (mp3 drive) which has windows 98 on it. I need to do this without booting into the OS on the mp3 drive because it will muck up the driver settings on it.

The volume levels are stored in the registry. You can't (safely anyway) modify the registry without booting into windows. Writing a program to do this would be way more work than dragging a monitor out to your car.

Below is one of several keys that gets modified while adjusting the master volume. The exact key path will be unique to your machine as it includes actual pci device information and location.

Your best bet is to execute a program on startup in the car.

Actually, you can have a program that runs on both OS's and sets the Volume to what ever the value is that is saved in a TXT file on the main disk drive. That way, when ever you modify the volume in one OS, it would change it for the other OS. It's really not hard, but it would require a seprate instal for each OS in seperate directories since 98 and xp use different drivers. Especially with the software I write. I like to make sure my software runs without errors.
