Win XP Hibernation and USB Mass Storage

    I recently purchased this:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...815777-1204824

Its basically a USB to ide converter. I then have this hooked up to my dvd drive and it works beautifully and the USB part plugged into the carputer. The problem is that when I go into hibernation it doesnt seem to be detected when i come back. I have to unplug it and then plug it back it in. It doesnt seem to do this to any of my other usb devices. I added every hotfix available for my Win XP system and have been doing a ton of google research but havent found a fix that works.

Another thing is that I tried it on my laptop and it works fine regarding coming out of hibernation and being detected. Anybody have any idea or settings that may make it work?

    The setup i have is:
    EPIA M10000
    256 ram
    4 gig laptop drive

I'm using the same motherboard, adapter, and OS; but my USB'd DVD drive works perfectly after awaking from hibernation. My DVD drive is a TEAC DW-224E. I installed the VIA USB drivers, but never used the driver CD that came with the Disk-Go adapter, relying on WinXP's built in USB Mass Storage Device drivers. I have the adapter connected to one of the two rear panel USB ports. I assume that you have no USB hub in the way. If there is anything you want me to try in order to recreate this, just let me know.

btw - When I first set this system up, I set the BIOS to boot from USB CD, and installed windows using the drive connected to the adapter!

    Good luck,
    -Stephen

Thanks for the offer Stephen. Ive installed all the latest drivers but ill try to install the latest USB drivers again. Could you get me your bios power management options and also the power options under the device manager for the "USB Root Hub" that its plugged into.

Also is your win xp fully updated? And what is your resume time coming out of hibernation?

Whenever you get a chance to do it just PM, email or reply back in the thread. Thanks!

The "USB Root Hub" power management options are set to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". The other option, "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby," is not available.

I have Service Pack 1, but have not bothered with any of the other updates yet. This is a prototype system, and I am doing a lot of drive re-imaging and hardware shuffling, so I haven't even activated WinXP yet.

In the BIOS Power Management Setup screen:
    ACPI Suspend type: S1(POS)
    HDD Power Down: Disabled
    Power Management Timer: Disabled
Video Off Option: Suspend -> Off
    Power Off by PWRBTN: Instant-Off
Run VGABIOS if S3 Resume: Auto
    AC Loss Auto restart: Off

Also, I never switched PNP OS Installed from No.

ok, after I wrote that, I switched it to PNP OS, and when I saved the new BIOS settings and it rebooted, the drive didn't show up. I reconnected it and it worked again, exactly like you described. I then tried hibernating and even going back and forth on the BIOS settings, but haven't been able to recreate it. Strange. But it sounds like yours disappears after hibernation consistently, not just once in a while.

My resume time is about 25 seconds from power button press to usable.

I'm very interested in making sure that this will not be a problem in the future, so I will continue trying to determine what circumstances cause it to disapear. Please let me know if there is anything you'd like me to try in order to recreate this problem.

    Thanks,
    -Stephen

I have all those settings setup already even PNP OS set to no. The dvd drive im using is a laptop drive that has an ide converter that is then connected to the usb adapter. Are you using a laptop dvd drive as well?

Also how are you powering your usb adapter. In my car i basically power it through my carputer power supply by tapping the power that actually goes into my dvd player and sending 5 volts over to the adapter but in the house i use the provided ac power supply to power the adapter but use the computers power supply to power the actually dvd unit. I might try a real ide dvd device and see if that works or just a regular hard drive and see if that comes out of hibernation.

The only thing i can maybe think of is that maybe since the adapter is still getting power it could be messing it up but in the car that shouldnt be a problem since the carputer and the adapter are getting power from the same line.

You said you installed WinXP through your USB- CD Rom and set that as your boot choice. I tried that just to see if i could boot from it like that and i couldnt get it to work. Did you do anything special to be able to do that other than change the boot order?

    Thanks again!
