Question just reinstalled WinXP......have one question..need a little help.

Wanted to do a fresh install of XP on my desktop hard drive. So I formatted it, restarted and the XP cd wouldnt boot. So I slaved it to my carputer hard drive (which I hooked up to my desktop) and through XP on my varputer hard drive I copied the XP disk onto my desktop hard drive. restarted to dos and it said this program cannot be ran in this version of dos.

So I just ran the setup file from XP (running on carputer hard drive), installed XP to my freshly formatted desktop drive (D:\windows). After the install was finished XP now runs smooth and perfect however I cant boot unless my desktop hard drive is slaved to my carputer hard drive. And at the boot menu I have to pick The XP thats installed on the desktop hard drive.

So (if that made sence) how do i make it so I can boot into xp onto my desktop hard drive w/o the hard drive i installed xp off of (carputer) installed. im sure it has to do with the bootloader or something.

    thanks

Ironically, you could fix it by booting off the XP cd.

I didn't think about this, but your boot loader will probably be on your carputer drive. So you are going to need the cd to boot to fix the boot loader.

Other than that, the boot.ini on the desktop hd should read (after you fix the bootloader, set it to master, and remove the carputer drive)

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"

in my case i just installed an old version of win98 and then XP right on top of it. I know, it's better when it's installed on a fresh hd, but at least that way I saved myself a lot of time going through what you guys are doing.

    In a similar vein:
XP doesn't want to boot if I change my ide configuration, how can I change my hard disks about??
Of all the things I've ever lost my sanity was the hardest to deal with
