Thread: playlist necessary? (philosophical)

Odyssey: I thought database search is generally limited by the harddrive speed, not as much as the processor.

For an incremental database build, if I delete a few songs here and there, (instead of one large directory,) would it take much longer?

Database is indeed pretty powerful. I can select such things as "Ozzy between '80 and '85" or search for "Hayden performed with electric guitar." Perhaps I should think about readapting my hardware.

Not if your database lives entirely in memory, as mine does.

Database build is typically less than 1 minute (1500 songs), database load is less than 1 second. Running on a P233 MMX under DOS 6.2.

I organise things by directory, where each directory is one CD (I choose CD then song on my system). Kinda like a hierarchical playlist (playlist of playlists).

Wasn't sure at first how you would get away without a playlist/database - you have to have a list of songs somewhere, otherwise how do you know what songs are available to play? Even the directory structure on disk can be considered a database.
