Whilst I release the software free, I do not intend to release source code at this time. If I stop development myself, then I will possibly release the code, on the provisor that no-one nicks it and tries to sell it! If and when that will be though, I cannot say. It will only be if I get bored, get a job on a space shuttle, or go to prison

Thing is, I put that feature in, but it's not really expected to be useful on the default skin as the vis window is too small. It will need a skin with a bigger vis to be useful, then the zoom +/- buttons will be visible. I don't want to clutter the main screen up with more buttons, there's enough there already!

I am trying to work on this problems with the new skin - so far no luck... I am thinking having a buttons area - then you click a swap button ( like the skin ) to get another set of buttona diffrent functions... the closest example I can give is the way cash machine work by changing the function... ?

Not sure I know what you mean there. Double-click toggles the GPS app between the Vis window and its usual place.

If GPS is in the Vis window, then the "usual place" will be black. Is this what you mean? I could easly make it just not show the "usual place" if its currently embedded?

Found out later the vis screen size can be changed, sort of answered one part. Right... stat CB up, imediatly double click the GPS button and it goes wrong.. also you can do the same by going in the MP3 area and swapping a few times the diffrent views, let me know how you get on

Very lastly - do you have to create playlists for the music... most of mine is already set up in directorys. Also where are these list stored for back up purposes ?

PS :- For any one waiting for Destinator 3 - you may want to read this...

I like the idea, but didn't really want to do this as Destinator is just one of the available GPS applications. If I put in loads of buttons for Destinator, they they'll have to work for MapPoint, CoPilot etc...

I will ponder the idea, but it won't be top of the list. I suspect only a minority will want to see/usr the small map, and all the MP3 stuff.

For now, perhaps you might want your skin to have the GPS panel partially overlap the MP3 panel. That way you get your Destinator, but you can still see useful parts of the MP3 panel like current track etc.

(at the moment the MP3 panel hides when you open the GPS panel, but I can change that very easily).

I can't reproduce this problem. I've clicked and double-clicked until the cows come home ( afternoon, Ermintrude ). The only thing I can see that may be what you're seeing is, like I say, full black screen when GPS is embedded in the Vis window (which I can fix easily). Are you implying you lose it totally?

Playlists aren't required. You browse the directory tree. eg browse to "C:\Media\Phat\Chemica Brothers" and click "New List" to have every media file below it as the current list of media (it may be one album, it may be their entire works). You can then select another directory and click "Add" to have more than one. This way you can queue up as many albums as you like, and never press a button again!

Playlists are an "option", so if you do have saved playlists in the Media Library you can select those. Similarly (though I hadn't actually thought about this, it will work), if you queue up loads of MP3s and want to save that playlist, then the current playlist will be in your "My Playlists" directory called "_CarBox Saved Playlist". Simply copy this as whatever you want and your selection is there forever more. I will add a button to save playlists in time, but this will need writing a more useful onscreen QWERTY first.

I like this idea of the small map as an option on or off instead of the visual display or both

This too as an option would be great then the user can specify the look themselves?

Right, looks like I'll be doing quite a bit of changing to the software But doing all these changes to 3 skins makes it a whole load more time consuming.

So, I propose initially to drop the DefaultSkin -- If anyone actually likes and uses that please speak now, lest it be sacked into oblivion.

Secondly, can anyone who has or is in the process of making skins tell me what type of skin they are doing? (the original type 1, or new type 2). I don't mind too much keeping both types, but if no one else is skinning type 1 I'd rather remove that one too, simply because it stretches very poorly).

    New Version Released

Latest version 0.4 of CarBox is now available at the usual place. Changes include : -

    - Added a search facility! (see details below).
    - Removed the original skinning format (with separate icons). It just didn't scale well at all.
    - Removed one of the skins, so I only have one to maintain. I'm no artist and it was just taking too long to maintain more than one skin!

    Search Facility

The search facility basically works like this. In the window where you select media, instead of there being a "playlist" button, there is now an "others" button. Click this, and you get more options. "Playlist" as before, but also "Search Media" and "Search Albums". Click one of these and you get an on-screen keyboard like this: -

( Please excuse the keyboard skin, it's not in keeping with the rest of the skin, but I just couldn't resist it )

Now, on the keyboard you can type your search item. You can then choose to cancel, or "enter". If you Enter, it will search your Media directory tree for the string you type.

"Search Media" will find all individual "media files" whose name contains your search string, "Search Albums" will find all "directories" within your tree that contain your search string. You can then "add" or create a "new list" with the item(s) returned from the search as you would normally.

As an example, "Search Media" for "cold" may find the following tracks : -

    Coldplay - Clocks.mp3
Coldcut and the Plastic Population - Doctorin the House
Erik B + Rakim - Paid in Full (Coldcut Mix)

Where "Search Albums" for "cold" may find : -

    Coldplay - Parachutes
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head

The search facility is only useful if your directories and MP3s are names appropriately though, it doesn't look at ID3 tags for the search. Whilst not 100% ideal, I find this method to be a lot quicker. And you should have well named MP3s anyway if you have enough you need to search

    Functionality Change Freeze

For now, I plan not to add any extra features to CarBox which mean extra buttons etc, and to concentrate more on bugfixes, documentation, code tidying, and writing apps for skinning and configuration. I will however add the facility for keyboard control, as this won't require extra buttons/skin changes.

I've decided this partially to keep a bit of stability (I want to try a better skin, but it keeps the app static for any other skinners), but I'm worried of adding too many bugs with loads of new features.

Now my screen has arrived I'll be using it excessively in my car, so I should be able to ween out any bugs there may be.

In terms of requests already made for features, things like GPS in the main screen, multiple embedded apps, these will be added later, but as they're a "minority user base" feature, I'm going to let it stabilize first.

If you like I could simulate the membrane keyboard by making it randomly not respond to keypresses
