Those running Linux from CF, how to make bootable?

I'm trying to install lilo or grub on a 128M CF card in a pcmcia adapterin my laptop. Grub won't install becaue there is no BIOS entry for the CF drive. Lilo gives the error Fatal: open /dev/hdc: No such file or directory. I found the ALCS site and read his directions and he installs lilo by boting from a floppy, but my mini-itx MB doesn't support floppy drives. So how do you make the CF bootable?
