    Lightbulb PEBuilder

I've been using Windows PE 1.2 at work for a while to develop our automated Windows XP rollouts, and think it might be of use to some adventurous users who want to cut down Windows XP.

It's not readily available unless you're a business, OEM or university BUT you can get an equivalent (though you might need to check you're licensed ), at the following website:

    http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

You need a Windows XP cd to use this, and it's aimed at building bootable CDs. Although I've never tried it, and don't plan to (it's not my next avenue of discovery atm) you can install it onto a HDD and boot into it.

Judging by the fact it boots to a GUI in less than a minute from a CD rom (which isn't very fast!) it should be a lot lot faster booting from a HDD. And of course it's already cut down a lot more than I think XP Lite can be.

    ive tried it!
and since i dont want to start a new thread about it im jumping this old thread... sorry

this thing works and its basically a tool for network administrators that can check for viruses and fix problems on a computer without the need of the windows that installed on the computer itself! it all run from the CD!

if some people heard about Knoppix (Almost full linux that boots from a CD) it similar to that.
heres a few links to get you started if youre interested:
    pebuilder main site
A quick guide to make a bootable win CD with a familiar win platform

search for plugins (there are tons of them!) for bartpe! they are very useful!

    about the size:
the first try with a win XP pro (sp1a) took 170MB (with frodoplayer folder inside)
the second try of win XP Pro (sp2) with reatogo (win desktop platform) took 440MB

thats really small and can be smaller since ive put a lot of unnesecerry tools inside

An alternative to PEBuilder is BartPE, which is free.

Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

I SO have not had my coffee this morning....

In my defense (for whatever that's worth) there is another PE building tool out there that's commercial and charges a hefty fee. There's a MS tool, as well that sucks ***, apparently. I've never used it.

I'm going to go have my coffee now...

The MS one is a build-it-yourself kind of affair. You get a CD that boots and also has a bunch of tools for making your own. It's got various restrictions such as wont run longer than 24 hours.

Wow this is an old thread to dig up though!!
