    Playing DVDs with M10000

I finally have the system for my CarPC complete. At this point it's just customizing the software packages and making sure every function I would like to have is working.

When I try to play DVDs in Windows Media on XP I get an error that no compatible decoders are installed. I have installed all drivers and when I go into device manager, nothing is missing. Anything special I need to do to get the DVD decodor working? I am running a DVD-ROM. I'm going to update Windows Media to the newest version tonight and screw around a little, but I just figured I'd ask in the meantime, in case anyone else has had this problem.

This is the exact error "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." I just updated to 9.0 and got the same thing. When I click web help it brings me to a page to buy decoders for Windows Media. Anyone know anything about this or a way around? If not, what DVD program do you recommend??? I don't have this problem on my other PCs, so I'm assuming it has something to do with this DVD decoder!

You have to install a third party DVD decoder such as WinDVD or PowerDVD or XingDVD, etc. You can even use the trial version of WinDVD I believe. Once that has been installed, Media Player will then work. Media Player will only play dvds once a third party decoder has been installed, the DVD codec isn't available via the normal codec download.

Your dvd rom should have come with a decoder but it must not have. Anyway, I use WinDvd (it came with my dvd rom from best buy). It works great but the controls are too small for a 7" touchscreen.

    Power dvd is also fine.

My DVD ROM does have a decoder..but it's a decoder card. The case I am using for my car PC doesn't have room for a full PCI card. The thing is that I was under the impression the M10000 has an onboard DVD decoder. Doesn't it??? That's one of the main reasons I bought it.

Or are you referring to the decoder software???

I don't recall any onboard DVD decoding, but maybe I over looked it in my rush to install the computer. If you've installed everything on the included DVD, I'd assume that you just need a third party software. If all you're looking to do is us Media Player or Media Engine (which uses Media Player as I understand) I would just download the trial version of WinDVD and give that a whirl. The only plus that I can think of to the full version of WinDVD is that it allows software decoding of DTS audio if you're using the on-board 5.1 surround sound (which has been noted to have some problems). So I guess my suggestion is to try the trial of WinDVD just to get the decoder for Windows Media Player. That way it's free at least. I have the fill version of WinDVD and really use Media Player or Media Engine more than I use WinDVD.

If you look here it looks like it does http://www.viavpsd.com/product/epia_...therboardId=81

    It says:

"VGA - Integrated VIA Unichrome AGP graphics with MPEG-2 decoder"

MPEG-2 decoder equals DVD decoding hardware right?

Thanks for the info Jackso, and everyone else. I'm going to try installing another program later. I am just too lazy to get to it since I don't have a KVM
