If it's stuck, force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway

Check out Flash Studio Pro... http://www.multidmedia.com/software/flashstudio/
it takes your .swf files and makes them into fully customizable applications, utilizing ActiveX, microsoft Access databases (doesn't have to be via http) also uses joystick and direct x commands, video embedding, etc.. basically everything Flash MX does with an extra set of 400 FS Commands... very powerful application...

Flash is the Bomb for animation and even for interfaces. Check out Fullsail's website. The only problems I have with it are that 1) It can be slow as a dog without a nice system, which is not always the case with most embedded-level carPCs, and 2) Knowledge of ActionScripting is a must (of which I have NONE). Bummer. If you know your Flash, and have a capable machine, it should be really nice to make happen in a car!

That's an inspiring flash intro on that site... I know Flash, just need to research how to make it interact with the files, etc... I would love to embed windows media, then could still maintain visualizations, etc... I'm gathering more information to see if this would be a viable option... btw, I live about 30 minutes from Full Sail...

I asked my brother (next thing to a Flash God, if there is one) about how to go about interacting with local files, and he says that there is something similar to VB's File System Object in Flash. His specialty is web and database interactivity, so he couldn't be specific about it, but his take on the situation is: if you want to get there, Flash will take you. Seems a little too all-inclusive, but after seeing what is possible with full-motion video and music database interactivity, I'm more than willing to take his word as gospel truth.

By the way, I still hold that VB is the best way for non-technical-programming-laguage people like me to get a frontend going, but VB DOES allow one to embed a Flash object. Would it not be possible to create a small looping movie, then embed it into application, keeping both background colors the same to enhance the background effect?

    Deadweasel,

You can do it that way but it's not going to be as effective as running a fully flashed app. Embedding flash object does become a pain esp. if you want to make it in such a way that you only load whichever flash file you want (skins).

I know how to program in flash as well (I have not for the past 8 months) but I can pick it up again and it is although very powerful, it will take more time in my case. The best way is to have a flash animation and output it as a AVI file and insert it in the C or VB project.

Oooohhh.. good call. I kept thinking along the lines of coding it. This is a really cool idea, and maybe I will attempt something like that. Later. For now, I think I'd like to focus on having something that's useful first and foremost!
