If im reading this correctly, you are saying you can attach the post marked collector directly to a 12 volt source? is that right? Then attach the base post to the number 4 wire from your serial port and attach the emitter post to the relay switch on the amp. Once the package is installed in Winxp, and the services start up, it should turn on the amp? Did I get that correct? I ask because I have that thump in my system as well and would really like to get rid of it. Are the posts on the transistor marked which is which or is there a color code involved?
    Thanks,
    peter

I listed it as a 2N2222 commonly available at just about any RadioShack... But!... I am gonna actually work on something a little more power tollerant.. You can try this for very little $$... should actually be less than a buck... but it would be alot better if you had a opto-isolator between the Transistor and Carputer... and also I am gonna look for a cheap source for a more suitable Transistor.. I still have not gotten to test this myself as I have not had the time..
I will soon if no one else does since i have a few hundred General purpose 2222 transistors....
but you pretty much hit the nail on the head...

**EDIT** Thinking about it.. It would be more practical and safer for the equipment to use the transistor to trip a relay rated at around 1amp.. although the above should work fine I think I might go with a relay design...
I will make a diagram unless someone beats me to it later tonight when I get home..

    Hi!

what happened with this? Were you able to get rid of the "thumps"? I'm gonna go get the parts I need this week and give it a try. I just needed to build a workbench to work on and got that done this weekend.

I connected the serial port directly to the amp's remote, and it still works very good... :-) No "thumps" at all..

Do you have a transisitor in there somewhere or are you connecting directly between your serial port and the remote turn on for the amps?

That's good to know, I finally mounted my pc in the trunk last night. I'll be giving this serial rig a try this weekend.

    Take Care,
    Peter

    How about:

    [Edit]
Totally missed the 2nd page of the post , (oops) anyway just using a transistor isn't really going to provide much protection to either the transistor or the serial port, the above schematic is better.
