    fileSync v1.0 - updated

    download http://www.krissstephen.net/hosting/images/fileSync.zip

    after reading a couple of syncing posts yesterday I decided to make a synching programme, that automatically synchs when you network becomes available.

    Ive done a few local tests now need some end user help :-)

    the programme runs on your main server ie the one with the mp3s etc, and if set to auto, pings looking for your carcomp, if it finds it, it will sync all the files in the local directory with all the files in the car comp, sync is only one way local > remote if the file already exists it leaves it if not it copies it.

    Recursive searching and directory creating, have a go and please let me know what you think.

    Kris,

    I'm getting an error message "this app failed to start because qtinf.dll was not found......". Am I doing something wrong?

    BTW...nice site! you've been a busy boy!

    Does it do it the proper rsync way, ie only send changes to files, etc? ie if I change all the ID3 tags of all my mp3s, rsync would send just the changed bits of each file saving time. Does FileSync, or will it send the lot?

    Car changed for TVR Griffith 500, so computer de-installed. Using a Dension 100ix w/60Gb HD unit in the interim.

    How does it know a file is different? Date and time? File name? Last accessed? Will it remove older files then copy or does it make it so both DIRs. are mirrored?

    it copies the files from the local dir (house comp) to the specified foler on the remote comp (car) it SIMPLY copies them, ie like for like, if a file is already copied it leaves them, if its not copied it copies them over.

    an automated drag and drop if you will

    No qtinf.dll error should appear now :-D it was because I was using a 3rd party component for the browse for folder dialog.

    Okay heres a description of what it does and how it works.

    fileSync v1.0
    ==========

    Runs an automated copy and paste for all files from the local (mp server) to remote (car comp).

    If files dont exist on target computer, it copies them, if they do exist it doesnt recopy them.

    If set to autosync as soon as you come in contact with your network ie a ping gets a reply then it starts the syncing process automatically, the programme will then not re-sync until the connection has been broken and then made again.

    On first use, the programme will run a bit slow if copy a huge amount of data ie greater than 1gb (im working on makin it faster) but it will work, after that it just does the missing files, so its use speeds up.

    Using
    =====

    On first use you will be told to fill out some details.

    You select Options > change local > then select the local folder
    then Options > change remote > select the remote folder (i map a drive to my car comp for this)
    you can then select if you want to autosync, if you select this you are prompted for the IP address of the carcomputer.

    You can also manualy sync by choosing, File > Sync

    When booted the programme automaticall, goes to the sytem tray, right click on the fS icon then select the option you want.

    Let me know your comments etc etc

    Kriss,

    We're making progress!! I am now able to run the app. However, the file transfer does not start. I have used Ethereal to capture the packets being transferred, and it shows my host (192.168.1.202) successfully pining my carpc (192.168.1.102), but there is not file transfer. I am trying to use "autosync". Let me know what else I should try.

    thx

    heres how i have mine setup

    i have a drive called c:\music\ on my desktop (local drive)
    i have a drive called d:\ on my carcomp (remot drive)

    the d:\ drive is mapped to c:\music\ on the car comp and the share on car comp allows full permissions for file copy, remove etc etc

    have you tried using the manual sync from the File > Sync option ?
