I'm working on an app to display heading, speed and location, I hadn't intended to remember any data though. My main aim is to use it to adjust the volume to compensate for speed.Originally Posted by winkelhoch

remembering data isn't a huge issue. It would be very useful to me to be able to display the other information though. How are you progressing?
I believe by "remembering data" he meant to display the total distance travelled etc.
Unless you can hook into the ODB port on your car (if it's got one) then without a GPS receiver, you won't be able to get those values.

I kinda guessed that alright (regarding remembering information). I would be able to develop something to log the data myself. Its the reading and displaying the initial data is what I'm interested in. I'm involved in organising car rallies and being able to log speed and distances would be a huge advantage to me as opposed to buying a rally tripmeter and boring the dash etc.
If the car you have has ODB or ODB-II, then you are in luck. Otherwise, it's GPS, or finding some way of reading speed etc some other way. I am going to have the exact same problem with my Ford Anglia, which I am putting a carputer in. Hopefully i'll have some money soon to buy any bits i'll need to do it!

Anyone know about importing routes into mapping apps? If I save my location via GPS every second can I import this into another tool to display where I went easily?

How do I find out if its ODB or ODB-II? Its a 2004 Ford FiestaOriginally Posted by Confused
Please people. Must we go through this so many times...
Yes, speed and distance would have to go through the OBD if you don't want to use GPS, but you can still get heading with out GPS as well. You can get an electronic USB compass off Yahoo or Google. It gives the source code to program with it and I'm sure it's a cheap thing to build. Just search!!! However, it's still easier just to use the GPS. But I find that the USB compass is better for faster heading switching since you must be moving for the GPS to pick up your direction.
Here's a theory (Not sure if you can do it)
Now if you know any one who is skilled with electronics boards, or you yourself know how to do this, you can run a parallel connection between the Speedometer and the computer to measure Voltage on newer gauges. This way you wouldn't have to tap the OBD. The speedo on electronic (non gear) driven clusters runs on a +5V (I think) DC signal. The computer can pick this up and translate it so you don't have to waste money on OBD crap since it would be a waste if you're not using it for the other millions of things it does.
