You need to go work for MS. Because this sounds like something they would produce.I would *NOT* like a helper, but that is just me.
here's an idea for way down the line
for people who would rather have the desktop visible than running a front-end, an interactive animated icon that acted as your "helper"
for instance, in the spirit of the "season", say a little green leprauchan named patty...and patty would have a voice, and you'd say "patty, launch gps" or "patty, play song" or "patty, switch to engine" (for obd, say)...and like the clever little cobbler he is, he'd do it for you
patty could give you voice directions for gps, or hold a little wooden sign displaying the name of the current track ("patty, quiet" for vol control)
and if you wanted a front-end, patty could be the fellow who pops up if you need to minimize it for some reason
it'll certainly require some advancements in natural speech recognition, and maybe it's more for fun and show than functionality, but what on this board isn't![]()
oh, and patty doesn't have to be your only character choice, of course...maybe a hot girl, or the pink panther, or even mr. t...i heard he's looking for work

This already exists, the microsoft technology is called agent. It's what clippy in office is based on. It already supports voice recognition and does a pretty good job at it if you have a good command syntax. All that you would have to do for your carputer interface would be to just program in the commands it would understand. However, be forewarned there is no end to the clippy haters out there.
Check out MSDN for more info:

The problem with interfaces like this is that even though they take advantage of some fantastic technology and do some really cool things, they always fall short of meeting the goals of the user percieved through the interface. When they see a character on the screen, they automatically assume that the character can understand and perform actions in the same way that a human can. Yes, this is what the interface was designed to do, however, in the end it is still just a computer simulating human interaction and therefore processes things and gives results as a computer would. The lesson is that if you program something to look like an intelligent being, it damn well better act in every way like an intelligent being or your users will be disappointed even if it performs better relative to any other computer interface. However, if on the otherhand you just program a simple computer interface, say a text screen showing voice recognition output of the recognized words, people will only compare the functionaly of the program to other computer programs, not to humans.

i'd venture to say that every single person on this board wouldn't want/need clippy...but maybe other people who drive their cars or use their carputers would...people who aren't comfortable taking their eyes of the road for instance
i sure as hell don't use clippy either, i know how to type a freakin letter and insert a graphic, and i don't need help from a winky-blinky paper clip...alas, some people out there do, and clippy for them comes in handy
ask these same people to drive and press buttons at the same time? disaster.
like i said, i'm thinking a) in the very long term and b) about people to whom "carputer" is a foreign term...or a crazy idea they have to keep hearing about all the time
