I was testing my new app, which uses a GPS connection and also can run the WinXP OSK (on-screen keyboard) for text entry, and I noticed that the GPS wouldn't connect on Comm port 1 while I had the OSK running. As soon as I stopped the OSK, the GPS connected.
Why would the OSK program have anything to do with a comm port?
Because it came from microsoft, it's probably based on some 10 year old outdated code full of workarounds.

wi77iam: The OSK has support for key selection via keyboard, serial port or joystick input. Go under Settings -> Typing mode and then select "Joystick or key to select" if it is not selected. Hit "Advanced" and uncheck the serial port box. Click OK and re-select "Click to Select" and hit OK again. Restarting the OSK might help at this point too.
I don't know if that might fix your problem, but it sure can't hurt to try. The OSK is able to open up the serial port, and maybe that will disable it from happening.
Failing that, there are far better OSK's for windows available than the one that is shipped as default with XP. A Google search turns up tons, and a lot are free.

As long as you realize they are just your conjecture and opinions. It's "cool" to bash Microsoft and criticize their software, even if it's unfounded. osk was the problem.
