Hey man, is that a cop radio there? Tsk tsk tsk..
    Nice setup!

You know, I always hated trucks and SUVs - but Hummer is probably the only vehicle in that class that I would love to own!

Its quite legal to own and use a scanner, even if it can truck the cops, its not legal, however, to use a scanner in the commission of a crime, say, sitting outside the bank listening for any sign of cops. Using a Hummer as a getaway car isnt a great idea anyway, they are not exactly inconspicious

I use the scanner for a lot of things, sometimes listening to the cops because where I live has very limited access, so if the road is out, which happens more often than I would like (when cars drive over the cliff - usually deliberately) I can keep track of when it will be reopened. I also use it for ham radio purposes. My Icom units can scan but they are not very easy to work scanning when driving, the scanner is setup - using the computer - and is 10x easier to work as a pure scanner.

Currently I am using a cell phone for wireless access, but I am also working on a WIRES II solution that uses the ham equipment to maintain uninterrupted internet bandwidth. The purpose of this is for a bunch of us (hams, some Hummer owners) to provide a mobile mesh network over WiFi.

Of course I knew you weren't using that scanner to avoid cops after they spotted you speeding - who would ever think of that!

I always thought that those things can do pretty much everything tanks can

I was kidding; the general thinking is that the Hummers are unreliable. I have found this not to be the case for me. Maintenance is very very expensive, but so far I have had a lot of luck with failures. Its roughly $750/month to maintain, nothing compared with a wife, and you get to take it in the dirt. The closest I get to my wife romping in the mud (preferably with Kirsten Dunst) was in my dreams!

They do go most places a tank can, and as I recently discovered, a tank trap is also a Hummer trap. My local county decided they were sick of people driving up in the hills and dumping old sofas/fridges/etc so they put in a tank trap. A couple of berms which are square edged and 6 feet deep. I figured I'd give it a try, but unfortunately I ended up with the front end in the 6' hole and the back wheels in the air. Not a pretty sight. If I wasnt flapping to get out of the mess I would have had the sense to take some photos, but as it was I was thinking Id be in for a nice ticket if someone saw me. My winch was at the bottom of the hole so not much use. I called my friend and between us we got it out. Broke one of his half-shafts though! These are like the mechanical equiv of a fuse, easy to replace and inexpensive, and save some other component from getting shagged. How did I get onto this
