    latest version of wine

Hi... Its been a few months since the last post in this thread, but I was wondering if someone who's successfully set this up can give me a few pointing tips...

I'm using Gentoo Linux on my carPC, and have emerged the latest wine, which is 20041019. I've been trying as best I can to follow the mini-howto above, but for one I can't find any "tools/wineinstall" as in the mini-howto above, either under /usr/lib/wine tree or otherwise.. However when I first ran wine to test it, I noticed it created all the correct stuff in the home directory. (.wine/config fake_windows etc)

Secondly, there doesn't seem to be any keyboard.dll (or KEYBOARD.DLL etc) anywhere under .wine or under /usr/lib/wine/ trees. So I Can't delete it.. not sure if this is good or bad.

Thirdly, I can't find a Setup.exe in the 3.1 SDK of Destinator, so I'm assuming I should just make my own directories and copy the directory structure from the distribution ZIP over...

I have copied MFC42.DLL and the tahoma fonts to the correct locations. (~/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/system and ../fonts)

    Any thoughts?
Would be much nicer to not have to boot up vmware/win2k
    Cheers

Hmm Ok i fixed the above problem to some extent by putting MSVBVM60.DLL in the system dir... a silly mistake to make..
But now I'm up against this problem: The first config screen of Destinator comes up, then immediatly, I get: (in a wine (windows) message box) Runtime Error '440': Automation Error.
And I'm stumped... I might try swapping out the MFC42.DLL with a windows XP version (I think it's MFC42ENU.DLL on winxp?) I'll be back with results....

Is Xcar going to be a full package? What I mean by that is will it be simple to install and setup without being a Linux/Unix expert, and would it also hide Linux so user only ever saw the CarPC front end. I keep reading that many of these Speedcam detectors ang GPS units are based on linux but the user never sees it. Could Xcar be compiled as a full OS as most peoples carpc's don't need all the extra bells & whistles that a full OS install brings?

I am interested in migrating from Windows to a more reliable Linux setup but have zero linux experiance and a millenia worth of Windows XPrience ;-)

I'd be like the biggest dumbass noob ever with Linux!

    linux vs windows

that's the old history...lol I have very experienced in linux...and believe me ..to a car..there to much dead ends not because of the system but for the bad old thing that ....vendors don't release drivers, companies don't develop software is very anyoing to have years of linux on my back...having 2 or 3 comps all with linux..and in my car....rm -Rfv / ......and installed the evil MS windows...it's a very sad moment for me...I've installed windows on my car....if you are a noob it would be much more frustating...I tried and tried...but...there are not enough software..!

    Bump again....

Really interested in this... I'm now trying to get this to work with a friend of mine using Wine and ultimately FreeDrive (gonna contact CDR as soon as I can get the native Destinator.exe example to work)...

I got the "No Gps Connected" voice, but nothing is coming up...

So the problem now is that Destinator loads fine but is having problems interfacing with the serial port? Is that right?

Who are you asking? me? nope, destinator isnt loading anymore! I got the voice once (no gps was connected) but then couldnt get it to even start C_client.exe again....

anyways, I assume USB gpss would be harder to support but I'm using a garmin oem module, so its plain serial... If dest starts up I assume it would be able to read the gps without much troubles.... I will try a bit more on friday with my coworker....but he isnt really a wine guru or programming guru by any stretch (and neither am i for that matter in a *nix environment)
