The apps we use have to be windows based, such as GPS, GPS drivers, DVD apps, ect...
Strictly speaking, you don't have to 'wait' for any of those things in Windows either. It's just that MS hasn't made it simple for the ordinary user to tweak the start-up sequence.Originally Posted by eugenen

You guys are thinking windows too much still. There are plenty of linux apps that will work just as well as windows apps. With windows you can't configure the base kernel to remove the things you don't want, sure you can edit the registry and change some things but its no where near as modular or configurable.
How fast do you people need this to be? It use to take me longer to get in my car and pick out a cd then it currently does for my WinXP to come out of hibernation.. In 20 seconds or less I have music and full control in my car.. My music starts playing every morning before I even get settled into the car and ready to go...
As for linux... I use it daily at work and it is definetly more configurable... I have multiple MythTV Servers (Linux PVR software) running all over my house as well... As for carputers though.. I have seen and played with two carputer setups that used linux and my WinXP came out of hibernation way before there setups could bootup... It was most likely there configuration, but.. Also getting good GPS in linux sucks... most people try to rig up running windows gps software via wine...

Actually in our R&D lab we are testing a linux version of Mobile Media Center. We are looking to trim down the kernel and drivers to just was is needed for specific car computers. For example our test system is a TX3. Using just the linux kernel with the specific drivers and video (i.e. svgalib) I have a test version booting in 5 seconds. 2 - 3 seconds is really tough. Our test version is unstable, but shows this can be done with enough testing, time, and innovative thinking.
Our stable version is based on Windows/.NET, but we will have a version that will be a carputer OS so to speak in time. I will post something as soon as it is stable enough to test for you guys.
Take care

We are testing both Mono and DotGNU. Yeah, we are aware of the GPS issues too, but hopefully with Linux getting more popular you will see some ports or someone make a decent one for linux.

If you wanna make an OS your first program just make sure it says "Hello World" when booting...Originally Posted by Animepix

i cant remember the name of it, but i saw a OS on a tv show called 'thescreensavers' and it fit on a 1.5mb floppy disc, and i think it was written with something like 2 or 300 lines of code...and the boot time was REALLY low--maybe as low as 2-3 seconds, and it had a nice looking GUI. Just cant remember the damn name.
