Thumbs up has any1 seen the StatBox project ?

I was looking for some attempts to use some other windowing on linux besides using X which I dont particularly like and here is what I have found. This looks like a promising project.

He is using something called DirectFB. It has hardware support for a limited set of graphics cards. If you have one of the supported cards, heck yeah it is a great alternative to running all that is the X server.

    http://www.directfb.org

It has alpha blending/etc. which is perfect for his proposed interface.

Wow, those screenshots (http://www.trevorparscal.com/project...hots/V%200.3.0) look awsome. Unfortunately they are made with photoshop and not from software, but the guy has graphics talent indeed.

All we need to do is provide the software that implements those graphics.

    Cool project find.

To your point that you need a supported video card I am not too sure about that. The only thing you need is a supported frame buffer device even if it is vesa. For full featureset and acceleration stuff you would need a supported card. Now is all that stuff really needed for a car app ?!

Now the only thing that I would like to find out is what the software availability is for directfb and what still needs to be ported. I did some searched for "directfb wine" but have not found anything conclusive.

I also see that mplayer is ported to directfb and there are a bunch of other apps that work with the framebuffer for playing divx and dvd. For mp3z it shouldnt be such a big deal to actually create an interface for mpg321 or something like that.

    Thoughts ?!
