Start -> Run, type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes). Uncheck the "Users must enter a username/password to use this computer" and enter the username/password of the account you want to log on, and click OK

I updated XP and now it forces me to select a user (the only one on this compter is me) For the life of me I can't figure out how to turn it off so from start up I go right into my desk top. Thanks for any answers!
Frodo, since your probably up I think you can fix anything!...I'm special and I can't figure it out!

Easyiest way:
Autologin.
XP can be configured to start without entering a user name or password. Select Run... from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', to open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

What you have to do is have only your one account and the guest account. I believe I had an ASP.Net account somehow and I removed it to help with this problem once. On my home computer I have to turn off the guest account, but in my carputer, the only way to make it log right onto the desktop was to turn the guest account ON .. go figure! Play with those 2 and see if it helps. Also go to user account int he control panel and go to "change the way users log on or off" ..and check 'use the welcome screen'.... good luck
