That would be very useful if you could make that happen.

Actually, kefka may be right on this one. It all depends on the type of license the open source software is under. Qt/X11 is an example of open source software that is for sale for commercial use.

It does all depend on the license, you are right...

We went thru all this with our lawers a while back,

    this might be helpful:

    http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/selling.html

You can sell it, no problem there, but with GPL you must also distribute (or make freely available) the source code. So lets say you sell me project Foo which is GPL for some fee. I can then download the source and build it, put it and the source on my web site and give it away for free to as many people as I like. This would all be legal. Typically, as the article suggests, selling software is the wrong way to look at it. If I can do this, as you can see your offering for whatever fee seems suddenly less desirable.

The QT and MySql examples are ways for companies to get around the virul nature of GPL. If you want to build an app and dont want to give away your source code then getting the commercial license is a way to do it.

What I was getting at earlier was that once software is out in the open source domain its hard to go forward with it and make a company around it.

It gets complicated as you can see ...
