Changing Windows XP color scheme at night

I was wondering if anyone had found a utility that can change the color scheme in windows at a certain time (or could be run from a script that executes at a certain time)? I would like to have dialog boxes and whatnot switch to better colors at night.

Having support for skin-switching at a certain time in the various frontends is great, but there's no way to do it on a more generic level..

I have seen the gamma adjustment app.. nice; but all I want to change is the color schemes.

    Thanks!

hmm, this is an interesting thought. I am not aware of any applications that do this, or how windows does it, but I am sure it can be done. One way to do it would be to have two user accounts and make a program that switches between them depending on the time. I will look into how easy it is to switch themes and reply here. Are you using any specific themes? like that wincustomize or just using the normal windows themes?

Yes; just standard windows themes to keep it fast.. Actually, I'm just using the 'standard' windows look not even the rounded corners, though I know that it does still use the XP style engine...

So you want to switch from what to what??

I am at work right now and they have group policies on the xp machines, so I might or Might not be able to try out some source code.

I just want to switch the colors.. ie the stuff in Display Properties -> Appearance -> Advanced.. like the dialog box colors, scrollbar colors, default background color, text color, menu color, etc..

Black text; white BG is great for daytime but at night something like white text grey bg would be better..

Ahh I see, what you want to do is quite difficult with just the registry. Have you made two themes up that you want to use?? I will make two on my home computer and try to switch between them using an app I can try to write. Im sure it can be done, just not sure if my knowledge can do it

Sure; themes contain the color info too, so this would work fine. Thanks for looking into it.

Found some code that demontrates how to do this with the default windows themes, I will try to figure it out using custom themes. Once its figured out the rest is quite easy. Will work on it when I get home, and post any source code / instructions / findings here for some one else to take a look at, will be doing it in VB6.

I am unsure of this at the moment, but does any one know if windows 2000 themes are the same as XP themes? I have a Virtual machine of XP but would prefer to use a non-virutual machine.

    Just thinking....
If you setup two themes with the colors you want and then setup a scheduled event in Windows 'Scheduled Tasks' to have XP load a specific theme at a certain time....

Another way to do it: Have a button on the quicklaunch bar, or on the desktop where you have easy access to it so you can switch wenever necessary.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Problem with scheduled events is that they only run at certain times, so if you boot your car pc say at 8pm and your night theme was supposed to have run at 7:30 you would have missed it..

Is the theme changing built into scheduler? Not on an XP machine now so I can't check... If it is, maybe it's just kicking off a rundll call that we can use to write a script for the startup items...
