hibernate restore on my dell laptop with 512mb RAM is under 2 seconds - there must be something clever going on to pull it all back into main memory - or maybe it powers just the RAM in standby styli

Maybe i'm wrong but i know two different types of Hibernation:
    Suspend to ram
    Suspend to disk

In the first on datas are mantained inside the ram, and the power supply will give power only to ram and external usb. Resume is about 3 sec.
In the second one datas are saved from ram to the hd. The power supply cut power from every device. Resume take about 10/15 sec.
I use the first (S3) in my car. Power need is very low (i can leave my car in hibernate state for 10/15 days without problems to the battery). This is also useful because giveing power to the usb, my gps remain locked to satelites without delays on start.

Yep, but my laptop bios settings have an option if i use laptops own hibernate function to save it to ram and example if battery is low then it copy it to harddisk and is like normal hibernate but if there is power the hibernate works like suspend to ram. Quite cool if i say so...
