im lovin it
for the newbees..
i don't see the first thing to disable after a fresh install..
The My First Sony -GUI (taskbar and other features)
control panel -> system -> advanced ->
performance -> adjust for best performance..
.. of course has everyone done this
first things first: this one is my favorite:
add /noguiboot option to your \boot.ini file.
So it looks like this for example:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows XP" /fastdetect /noguiboot
This gets rid of annoying Starting WindowsXP animation and speeds up boot.
What's the step by step on how to do this. And is the animation you're referring to the welcome that appears even if you don't have a password setup.
Some people are using an old unused PC that was just sitting around gathering dust (that's where the original idea came from). They are not going out and buying brand spanking new PC's just to put in the car.Originally Posted by cenwesi
Yes there are some of us who are buying new bits to build PC's and make them OEM.
This hobby has many solutions, that's what makes it fun, what might be right for one will not be right for others. It's all about being different, otherwise why not just wait for the big manufacturers to come out with purposely designed car PC's.
In other words. LEAVE THE GUY ALONE.
for those of us who don't know how to get to this spot...how do you get to it to do these edits?Originally Posted by falconey
EDIT: answered my own question run -> \boot.ini
next question: when I bring that up it says:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
is it this last part that you edit or the blahblahblah part?
well I did something....or a few things, and now when I restart I am given the option of whether I want to boot into winbdows XP or windows
when I select windows XP it tells me that ti can't find it, when I select windows it boots into XP and I still have the windows splash screen...
any ideas on what I did wrong?
EDIT: figured it out:
instead of what was posted before
It should look like this (for my system at least)
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" / noexecute=optin/ fastdetect /noguiboot
Try adding this tot he bottom of the ini file:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="XP No GUI" / noexecute=optin/ fastdetect /noguiboot
When you reboot see if you have an option that says XP No Gui and if you hit it and nothing happens, just change the partition numbers until you find the right partition. After you get that to work then you can cancel the 30 sec. timeout
Partial Defense of Win98SE
Just for any newbie looking through this, I don't see why some people were knocking older versions of windows. IMHO Win98SE was the best windows OS ever released. It's fast, and reliable(with the right drivers and apps.) Like others said its good for the PCs just lying around. But I've been debating(until recently, microsoft finally annouced win98se wasn't going to be supported anymore) reformatting my AMD64 laptop with 512mb ram and an 80gb HD to Win98SE. I have legit copies of 98se and XP Pro. And to me 98se was more appealing til microsoft stopped supporting it.
P.S. Sorry for the half revival of this thread, it is a pretty informative thread...
