    What about category 3? The person who hears a song or two they like by an artist, then runs a search on Kazaa or whatever and downloads anything and everything by that artist? Then you find a track they collaborated with some other artist on, so you search and download anything by that artist. I love this method, because you get all kinds of obscure covers and collaborations, or tracks you never heard of. I don't know what album 95% of my music came off of. Would they require a different browsing method? :P

    My music is organized into folders for artists, and that's it. If there's an album that is meant to be listened to continuously (eg The Wall), I just name the files "Pink Floyd - The Wall 01 - ??? (hehehe... don't know the name of the song... but then again, I recorded The Wall off an LP, so it's just 4 tracks, Side 1,2,3,4). You could also make individual playlists for each album, but it could be a hassle.

    It seems to me that a lot of the browsing methods being discussed are used in MediaEngine (track, genre, artist, text search, or by folder). I just wish there were a way to make playlists by adding entire folders... as far as I know I've got to add each song individually.

    In FrodoPlayer you can open up the playlist editor and add by folder.

    I fit squarely into cat 2 here, but i have a definite disadvantage: i intend to have no lcd/monitor/touchscreen for my carputer (well to start with)

    I intend to put around 150 albums on at any one time, so i want to be able to browse through really quickly.

    i have got winamp 5 on my main pc for testing, and have found plugins Winamp KeyController and Album List which have enabled me to configure some keys:

    4 = previous album
    6 = next album
    1 = previous track
    3 = next track

    now the only problem i have is that i would like to be able to skip through 10 albums by double-tapping 4 and maybe to be able to skip artists by using 7&9. This would be a cool feature - ive tried a few of the special softwares here, and they all seem more aimed towards people with monitors/touchscreens - not cheap people like me!

    Anyone got any ideas how easy this would be to add into an app?

    edit: btw all my music is stored
    c:\music folder\artist\album
    or
    c:\music folder\artist\album\cd1
    c:\music folder\artist\album\cd2
    and its cool in winamp/album list to be able to just select c:\music folder and have it do it all for me

    Heh... no, not a keyboard in that sense. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Think about how you used to enter your initials in the old stand-up, arcade games. The letter 'A' is blinking and you use a up/down to change the letters and a button to set the character and move one space. My focus has always been on using a remote control, rather than touchscreen (even with my old head unit in arm's reach, I always opted for the remote). It would take a little bit longer to enter the full name, but if you have some voice feedback on the blinking letters, you can do it without ever looking at the screen. As the characters are entered, the non-matching entries are removed, paring the list down considerably. Chances are the system would have the correct group/song/album listed after just a few characters.

    Yes, but can you have a "next folder" button in the player so if you have multiple folders it will skip to the first song in the next one? Used to have a mp3 diskman that did that. Kinda useful if you folder your songs by artist or album.
