i have been testing this MP4 to see what I was looking at .. now i will admit that i dont know anything about this technology but i was curious as to the results that I would get.

I have a large number of files and most are encoded at different qualities. I ran this on about 100 of my music files @ 192 Kbit/s

one thing i noticed is that i am not going to save any space at all , in fact i will about double to tripple my space usage.

for one example i was listening to a mp3 that was done in 56 Kbit/s and the coverted MP4 in 192 Kbits what i was looking at is about a 4 meg size difference , and i am not sure that the quality was different at all. it seemed like the MP4 was a bit sharper but i am not really sure I can trust my hearing on this.

Can anyone else show some results they have recieved?

A 56 KBit MP3 will NEVER sound any better then a 56 KBit MP3 regardless of what you convert it to. It doesn't make any sense to convert a lower bit rate file to a higher bit rate one just for quality reasons. The way an MP4 will sound better then an MP3 is if you convert them both from the original lossless source.

I doubt MP4 will catch on like MP3 given the prevelance of good license free encoders like OGG Vorbis and the even bigger fact that microsoft is pushing for its own WMA encoding to become the next standard.

ahh ok ... So once a file is encoded into a mp3 thats about it .. there is no way to improve the quality without going to the origional media.

Wow this looks like i have alot of work on my hands to redo my whole collection into a higher quality.

    thanks

MP4 caught on in the form of AAC. The prefered format used by iTunes and the iPod. You can convert MP3s to AAC using iTunes.

However, converting a lossy format to another can only result in even more loss of information; no matter what bitrate you use.

Incidentally, bitrate is a measure of size, so a 192 MP3 is identical in size to a 192 MP4. When Apple introduced AAC, they mentioned smaller file size as a benefit . They meant that you could encode at 160 and have the same audio quality as a 192 MP3 which in my experience is true.

But most non-iPods play MP3s, WAV, and some WMA. Many will not play an MP4. Though I do agree it's a better all round format. Since My MP3 player auto-syncs with whats in my media folder (on my PC and eventually my car) it makes no sense for me. Not until my 30Gb MP3 player has MP4 supporting firmware.

And you can convert ACC (MP4) to MP3, but then (I had to) convert the id3 tags to v1.0.

Radioman, it is always tough to be on the cutting edge. Don't try to sway people one way or the other. Just be happy with what you have found

We will all come around at some time or another

And if your Car Computer software uses media player for a core this will let you play .MP4

without extracting or converting to mp3

    http://www.frontiernet.net/~radioman...p4%20Codec.exe

right click on a mp4 and goto property and just tell it to open in your NORMAL Media player and your Good to go.

    just Trying to be Nice.

WAY To HIGH for a 56k
a 192 KBPS mp4 is not the same as a 192 KBPS mp3 in quality you just made a large file for nothing .
    MP4 - 3.1 MB - 96 kbps (sounds as good as 192 mp3)
    MP4 - 6.2 MB - 192 kbps (close to aiff quality)
    MP4 96 = Around 160 Mp3
    MP4 196 = around 256 MP3
